Marvel’s decision to send ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ back to theaters was always going to draw comparisons to the 2019 original, especially with the rerelease positioned as a bridge into December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Most of the conversation so far has centered on new footage and the debut of Disney’s Infinity Vision format, giving fans plenty to speculate about before tickets even went on sale.

But once the first official trailers dropped, attention shifted toward something nobody was expecting: how different the movie actually looks. Side-by-side comparisons between ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ footage and the original film started circulating online, and the visual gap turned out to be more noticeable than a typical rerelease would suggest.

The core of the discovery centers on color grading. Fans comparing shots from the Encore trailer against the version of ‘Endgame’ streaming on Disney+ have pointed to noticeably increased contrast and saturation in specific scenes, including a shot of Thanos leading his armies into battle that now reads as more vibrant and less washed-out than before. Some have even suggested the Mad Titan himself appears more purple in the new version, closer to his comic book design than the muddier tone associated with the original film.

That shift addresses a complaint that’s followed ‘Endgame’ since its original release. The film was widely praised as a satisfying conclusion to the Infinity Saga, but its color grading drew criticism at the time for leaning heavily into a flat, desaturated brown-and-gray palette that some felt undercut the visual spectacle of its biggest moments.

Reaction from fans has been largely positive, with plenty of X users praising how much sharper and more detailed the rereleased footage looks compared to what they remember from theaters seven years ago. Some comments have gone as far as calling the original cut an embarrassment by comparison, while others have simply expressed excitement at seeing familiar scenes rendered with noticeably richer color.

There’s also a layer of speculation building around what this change might signal for the future. Some fans have floated the idea that the more saturated look could hint at a shared visual tone between ‘Endgame Encore’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ suggesting Marvel may be aligning the color language across both films ahead of December’s release. Whether that theory holds up remains to be seen once ‘Doomsday’ actually arrives.

It’s worth noting some caution around how dramatic these changes really are. Promotional trailers are sometimes graded differently than the actual theatrical cut of a film, and there’s always a chance some of the comparisons circulating online involve edited or exaggerated images rather than a true side-by-side. Still, the shift has been consistent enough across multiple posts and outlets to suggest something real is going on with how this rerelease has been treated in post-production.

Whatever the full explanation turns out to be, it’s an unusual twist for a film that was already being sold primarily on nostalgia and new bonus footage. Marvel clearly recognized an opportunity to quietly polish one of the more debated aspects of an otherwise beloved movie, and judging by the early reaction, that decision appears to be paying off with audiences.
