Marvel Finally Reveals Its X-Men Cast at D23, And Adam Driver’s Villain Reveal Might Be the Best Troll of the Night

D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event has never been shy about saving its biggest bombshells for last, and this year’s Disney Entertainment Showcase proved no different. Between trailers, costume reveals, and surprise video cameos, Marvel Studios closed out its portion of the night with the kind of announcement fans have been begging for since the Fox acquisition.

For years, the question hanging over the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn’t if the X-Men would arrive, but who would actually suit up to play them. Names had leaked, rumors had swirled, and Sadie Sink’s surprise debut as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ only intensified the guessing game.

That guessing game officially ended when Kevin Feige took the stage to unveil Marvel’s new X-Men roster, confirming the film will arrive in theaters exclusively on May 5, 2028. Sink returns as Jean Grey, joined by director Jake Schreier, who previously helmed ‘Thunderbolts*’ and now takes the reins on this long-awaited reboot.

“It is so wonderful to be here and to finally be able to talk about this character after months of speculation,” Sink told the D23 crowd during the panel. She then teased the rest of the ensemble before welcoming her new co-stars to the stage one by one.

Kit Connor, best known for ‘Heartstopper’, steps into the role of Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, while ‘Kraven’-actor Christopher Abbott takes on Professor Charles Xavier. Samara Weaving rounds out the telepath contingent as Emma Frost, a role that had already leaked ahead of the event.

The rest of the lineup brought a few genuine surprises. Inde Navarrette, who broke out in ‘Obsession’, will play Rogue, while Maya Boyd has been cast as Storm, giving the team a noticeably youthful, “First Class”-style energy heading into the reboot.

Then came the night’s biggest swerve. Adam Driver crashed the panel via a surprise video message, initially joking that he’d been cast as Magneto before revealing his real role: a mysterious figure named Nathaniel Milbury.

Comic book fans immediately recognized the name as one of the many aliases of Mister Sinister, the sinister geneticist long considered one of the X-Men’s most dangerous adversaries. Driver didn’t shy away from addressing his long-rumored MCU debut directly.

“Kevin and I have been talking for years about me joining MCU,” Driver said, adding that they had “found something perfect with characters I feel very deeply about.” It’s a fitting entrance for an actor whose casting had been speculated about across the industry for months.

Feige also noted that this is only the first wave of X-Men casting, hinting that more names are still to come before the film’s 2028 release. For a franchise Marvel has been rebuilding from the ground up since regaining the rights, the studio clearly wants fans buzzing well ahead of any additional reveals.

Social media reaction was immediate and split between excitement and cautious optimism, with fans dissecting each casting choice against decades of comic book history. Sink and Connor’s youth-skewing take on Jean Grey and Cyclops has already sparked plenty of debate about how faithful this incarnation will be to classic X-Men lore, while Driver’s Mister Sinister casting has largely been celebrated as an inspired pick.

The reveal caps off a whirlwind stretch for Marvel’s mutant plans, arriving not long after Sink’s Jean Grey made her explosive introduction in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. With Schreier now confirmed behind the camera and a starry ensemble in place, the X-Men’s long-teased arrival in the MCU finally feels real.
