Marvel Heroes Gear Up to Save American History in New Series Coming This November
This November, Marvel Comics is launching a special new series called 1776 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. The story takes some of your favorite heroes like Captain America and Spider-Man back in time to the American Revolution.
Written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Ron Lim and Sean Damien Hill, the five-issue limited series promises a unique mix of superhero action and history.
The series was revealed to retailers at San Diego Comic-Con last month. In 1776, Marvel’s heroes team up with famous figures from the founding of the United States, such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams.
Together, they face a mysterious threat trying to rewrite history. The heroes must protect important moments in America’s past to keep both the country’s legacy and their own futures safe.
Captain America leads the group as they jump into action to stop anyone messing with history. The story focuses on the dangers of changing the past, showing how critical those early moments in the Revolution really were. The heroes have to be careful while navigating through 1776 to make sure the future stays on the right track.
Straczynski, the series’ writer, shared why he was excited to work on this story. He said, “One of the (many) things that I like about the Marvel Universe is that it takes place in the real world, our world. It’s New York, or Chicago, not some imaginary location. This also applies to our history, and the opportunity to view the events of 1776 through the lens of our characters, and to better understand the meaning of those events, and the sacrifices involved, was way too good to pass up. At a time when so much of American discourse has become factionalized, it is a good time to look back and see where this began, and what it still means today.”
The main cover art for the series is done by Pete Woods. There will also be special variant covers for the first issue by well-known artists like Joe Quesada, Paulo Siqueira, and Steve Rude. Additionally, Phil Jimenez creates a cover that pays tribute to Amazing Spider-Man #583, which was one of the best-selling comics in the 2000s.

With 1776, Marvel is blending exciting superhero storytelling with an important piece of American history. The series will take readers back to a crucial time in the nation’s past, showing how superheroes might protect the ideals and sacrifices that shaped the United States. It’s a fresh way to celebrate the country’s 250 years by combining real historical figures with the Marvel heroes people love.
