Marvel Just Revealed Steve Rogers’ New Look for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and He’s Not the Captain America Fans Remember
Chris Evans’ return to the MCU has never been a simple homecoming story. Since rumors of his comeback first surfaced, fans have spent well over a year debating whether Steve Rogers would show up as the same hero who walked off into the sunset at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ a darker Nomad-style variant, or even a villainous HYDRA version of the character entirely.
That speculation only intensified once Marvel confirmed Evans was actually returning, since the studio’s marketing rollout has deliberately kept his exact look under wraps for months. The character’s first official Doomsday teaser showed him with short hair and no beard, matching his Endgame appearance and suggesting that would be his look for the film.
That assumption changed this week. Marvel shared what it called the first official look at a bearded Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ confirming that Evans will not be sporting the clean-cut Endgame style fans expected going into the film.
The bearded, longer-haired design mirrors one of Rogers’ most iconic prior looks, the same style he wore in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, and Marvel is reportedly using it to signal a time jump between the film’s initial teaser and the main story. Earlier leaked concept art had even suggested the beard could be longer than his Infinity War look, paired with a tactical jacket reminiscent of his classic Nomad persona from the comics.
Steve’s Doomsday storyline has already been tied to major personal stakes, with the film’s first HD teaser showing him smiling while holding a child, cementing the idea that he found a happy ending with Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter after the events of Endgame. That same teaser revealed a closer look at his wedding ring and a new motorcycle, alongside the reveal of his and Peggy’s son.
Steve’s actions of traveling back in time remain crucial to the film’s main plot, and given that his happy ending has been rumored to be tied to the multiverse’s collapse, there is a real possibility his family’s safety becomes a driving stake in the story. Some fans have even speculated Evans could play a darker variant of the character altogether, though nothing in this week’s reveal points toward a HYDRA twist so far.
Steve appears alongside Thor, Ant-Man, the New Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four in newly released official concept art from Marvel Studios, shown this week at the Shanghai Expo in China, confirming his place within the massive ensemble assembling to face Doctor Doom. Marvel has also confirmed that footage set in the Doomsday story is being added to Avengers Endgame’s upcoming re-release, designed to serve as a bridge between the two films ahead of December.
What do you think about Steve Rogers’ new look?
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, with Robert Downey Jr leading the ensemble as Doctor Doom. The film arrives in theaters on December 18, and with Steve Rogers’ new look now officially confirmed, fans have one more piece of the puzzle to work with as they try to figure out exactly what role he plays in stopping Doom.
