Marvel Puts the Brakes on ‘Blade’ and ‘Deadpool 4’ – No Rush to Move Forward
Marvel is slowing things down. For the next year, there isn’t going to be much for fans to analyze or speculate about. The next Marvel movie to hit theaters will be Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, followed by Doomsday in December. After that, fans will have to wait until December 2027 for Avengers: Secret Wars.
According to Variety, Marvel Studios isn’t in any rush to push forward with two projects that have been sitting in development for years, the long-awaited Blade reboot and another Deadpool movie.
Instead, the studio seems content to let these films take a backseat for now. There is, however, some buzz around the possibility of a Ryan Coogler-directed Black Panther 3, which is reportedly sparking excitement inside Marvel.
Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, has also been talking about the character’s future. Speaking about what’s next for the wise-cracking antihero, Reynolds said he doesn’t know when he’ll play Deadpool again. He shared that he likes the idea of Deadpool appearing alongside the Avengers or X-Men but doesn’t want the character to officially join either group. In his words, “That would be the end of his journey.”
Reynolds also admitted he doesn’t see himself leading another solo Deadpool movie, saying, “A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant.”
Instead, he thinks Deadpool works best in a supporting or ensemble role and wants to keep pairing him with Wolverine. In April 2025, Reynolds revealed he was working on an ensemble project centered on three or four X-Men characters alongside Deadpool. The Hollywood Reporter says he’s been developing ideas on his own before bringing them to Marvel.
As for Blade, the road has been rocky. Marvel got the film rights back in 2011 and began developing a new version in 2013. In 2019, Mahershala Ali approached Marvel about starring as Blade, and Kevin Feige officially announced the project at San Diego Comic-Con that year. Ali even made a brief voice cameo in Eternals (2021). But since then, the film has faced multiple director changes, script rewrites, and repeated delays. The latest blow came in October 2024 when Marvel pulled it from their release schedule entirely.
For now, it seems both Deadpool 4 and Blade will remain on the shelf while Marvel figures out the future of its superhero universe.
Reports from insiders, as first revealed by Variety.
