Marvel Reportedly Plans ‘Midnight Sons’ After Ryan Gosling’s ‘Ghost Rider’

The ‘Midnight Sons‘ name has floated around Marvel fandom for years, usually as a wish-list item rather than a real plan. The supernatural team is one of the most requested comic adaptations that the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t yet touched. A new wave of chatter suggests the idea may finally be moving toward the screen.

Part of the reason is the arrival of a certain flaming-skulled biker. With a ‘Ghost Rider’ film now officially on the schedule, fans have started connecting dots that previously looked like loose threads. The question is no longer whether Marvel has the characters, but whether it has a plan to put them in one room.

According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios is developing a ‘Midnight Sons’ movie to follow ‘Ghost Rider’. The report frames the team-up as part of Marvel’s growing horror-leaning lineup, with Ryan Gosling’s solo film serving as the launchpad. Marvel hasn’t announced ‘Midnight Sons’ officially, so the claim should be treated as unconfirmed.

The ‘Ghost Rider’ movie itself is real. Marvel revealed Gosling in the role during its Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, and the film is slated for theaters in 2028. Kevin Feige said at the event that Gosling arrived with a specific vision drawn from particular comics, though he left the details for the actor to unveil himself.

Marvel’s ‘Midnight Sons’ Reportedly Loses Michael Green—New Writer Wanted!

This isn’t the first time the project has surfaced. Earlier reports claimed the ‘Midnight Sons’ film returned to active development in mid-2025 after sitting on hold, and that its previously rumored screenwriter, Michael Green, was no longer attached. Later rumors said a new writer had been hired, though none of that has been confirmed by the studio.

The status of ‘Blade’ has played into the speculation as well. In January, reports claimed Marvel had scrapped the standalone vampire hunter movie and planned to fold the character into ‘Midnight Sons’ instead. That would fit an earlier theory that Marvel’s supernatural corner would be built around a team event rather than a string of solo outings. Again, none of this has been officially verified.

Other pieces appear to be lining up. Marvel has said that Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight is expected to return in a future movie rather than a second Disney+ season, and Isaac has publicly backed Gosling as Ghost Rider. Richtman has also claimed that Sacha Baron Cohen’s Mephisto, who made his live-action debut in ‘Ironheart’, will be involved, and that Ghost Rider is set to lead the team.

In the comics, the team debuted in the early 1990s, built around Ghost Rider and a roster of occult-minded heroes. The group was created by Howard Mackie, Andy Kubert and Bobby Chase. Over the years its lineup has included Blade, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange and Elsa Bloodstone, along with other monster-adjacent figures such as Morbius.

That roster explains the appeal. The MCU already has Doctor Strange and a version of Moon Knight, plus a Werewolf by Night special that proved the studio can do horror on a small scale. Adding Ghost Rider and Blade would cover most of the classic core.

Nothing suggests an announcement is imminent. Marvel typically reveals major team-ups at big fan events or through its own slate presentations, so any real confirmation would likely come from the studio rather than from insider reports. For now, ‘Ghost Rider’ is the only piece of this puzzle with a release window.

If the rumor holds, Gosling’s film would have to do more than introduce a single hero. It would need to set up a wider supernatural world that audiences care about, and it would have to hit before Marvel commits to a team movie. Plenty can change in the time between now and then.

Which Marvel hero would you most want to see join Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider in a Midnight Sons movie?
