Marvel Studios Sets Disney+ Premiere Date for Thunderbolts*
Marvel Studios has announced that Thunderbolts* will arrive on Disney+ on August 27, giving fans their chance to stream the film at home. This release date sets a new record for the longest wait between a Marvel movie hitting theaters and its streaming debut, with 117 days between the two.
That’s even longer than Captain America: Brave New World at 103 days, Deadpool & Wolverine at 110 days, and The Marvels at 92 days.
One last shot at redemption ⚡️

The film, directed by Jake Schreier, first premiered on the red carpet in London on April 22 before opening in theaters on May 2, 2025. It is the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and serves as the final movie in Phase Five.
The story brings together a team of antiheroes who are trapped in a dangerous situation and must work together on a mission that could cost them their lives.
The cast features Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and more. The script was written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, with extra contributions from Lee Sung Jin, who had worked with Schreier before on the Netflix series Beef.
Marvel first hinted at the Thunderbolts team back in 2021, officially confirming the project in 2022. Filming began in early 2024 after delays caused by the Hollywood strikes. The production took place in Atlanta, Utah, and Kuala Lumpur before wrapping in June.
One detail that caught fans’ attention was the asterisk in the movie’s title. The mystery is cleared up in the ending, when the team renames themselves the New Avengers. The title actually changes in the end credits, and some later marketing materials used the updated name.
Although the film was praised by critics, it underperformed at the box office. By the end of July, it had earned about $190 million in the United States and $192 million internationally, for a total of $382.4 million. Reports suggested it needed around $425 million to break even, calling that target “unachievable.”
Still, audience and critic reactions were mostly positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, 88% of critics recommended it, with the site’s consensus saying, “Assembling a ragtag band of underdogs with Florence Pugh as their magnetic standout, Thunderbolts refreshingly goes back to the tried-and-true blueprint of the MCU’s best adventures.”
Metacritic scored it 68 out of 100, CinemaScore gave it an A–, and PostTrak reported that 74% of moviegoers would recommend it. Viewers also rated it 4.5 out of 5 stars in post-screening polls.
So while Thunderbolts* didn’t dominate the box office, it still won over plenty of fans. Starting August 27, Marvel fans will be able to watch it anytime on Disney+.
