Marvel’s China Countdown Booths Make a Splash: A Water-Wave Installation Has ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Fans Eyeing Talokan

Marvel doesn’t just count down to its biggest movies, it builds the clock in real life. Ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the studio has been staging elaborate physical displays across China, and the newest one has fans doing what they do best, which is zooming in on every detail. The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ countdown booth in China features a sculpted wave, and speculation about what it means has taken off.

The campaign has been building for months. In July, Marvel took over the Shanghai Expo with recreated sets from the film, including Doctor Doom’s throne room and Charles Xavier’s school, with a countdown clock beside the glowing green Marvel Studios logo. A September installation in Shanghai followed, arranging the film’s team logos among greenery, staircases and decorative clouds.

Now a new booth has appeared at a mall plaza, and its centerpiece is hard to miss. A glowing green Avengers “A” logo sits atop a dark rock formation, and a sculpted blue-and-white wave crashes around its base. Chinese branding for the film appears above a digital countdown, along with the mainland release date of December 16.

The countdown on the booth reads 53 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes and 31 seconds in the photo. That lines up with China’s release date, since the film opens in mainland China on December 16, two days ahead of its North American debut. It also opens that day in Hong Kong, Macau and the UK.

The wave is the detail fans are talking about. One fan account read it as a nod to the Talokans, the underwater people from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ and noted that six more booths in other locations appear to hint at different things. Marvel hasn’t commented on any of those readings, so they should be treated as speculation until the studio says otherwise.

The theory isn’t far-fetched. Namor, the ruler of Talokan, is back in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with Tenoch Huerta Mejía returning as Namor and Mabel Cadena as Namora. They appeared in the fourth teaser, which showed the Wakandans, a group of Talokans and Ben Grimm of the Fantastic Four meeting in a desert.

That teaser, which was attached to ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ in theaters, suggested an uneasy truce between old rivals in the face of Doctor Doom’s threat. It would be fitting for the water imagery to show up in a campaign built around the film’s multi-team ensemble. After all, Marvel has already used earlier displays to spotlight the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Wakandans.

The map graphic shared alongside the booth photo shows several installations across different locations. The fan who spotted the booth said each one hints at something different, which would match Marvel’s pattern of giving every stop its own theme. That hasn’t been confirmed, and Marvel hasn’t published a full list of locations.

What is documented is how heavily Marvel has been using physical installations in China. In September, it placed Mid-Autumn Festival-themed installations in three cities, and an Avengers “assemble mailbox” installation went into 50 cinemas from September 25 to October 7, inviting fans to write letters about their love for the franchise. Disney also showed ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ toys at a toy expo in Shanghai this week.

The mainland release date was announced on October 12, and Marvel followed with a list of films to catch up on before the movie. The push shows how much the studio cares about the Chinese market, where the first Avengers films were huge hits. An earlier release also means audiences there will be among the first in the world to see the film.

With the campaign now shifting into a more public phase, every booth, countdown change and special look gets scrutinized. A special look is airing during the World Series tonight, and the studio’s YouTube countdown clock has been acting oddly. The booths fit neatly into that pattern, giving fans a visual puzzle to solve.

Marvel hasn’t explained what the wave means, and the other installations haven’t been fully detailed. It could be a nod to Talokan, a general ocean theme or simply a striking piece of decor. Until the studio says more, it remains a fun clue rather than a confirmed one.

What is clear is that the countdown is well underway and Marvel is making every stop on the road to December count.

Does Marvel’s water-wave countdown booth hint at Namor and Talokan in Avengers: Doomsday?
