Marvel’s New X-Men Star Maya Boyd Is Already Winning Over Fans in Striking New Photos
Marvel’s next ‘X-Men’ reboot has generated plenty of buzz before a single frame has been shot, and much of that excitement centers on the actress stepping into one of the franchise’s most iconic roles. Maya Boyd went from Broadway standout to Marvel casting news almost overnight, and the rising star has spent the weeks since proving she has the star power to match the moment.
Her path to the role came together quickly. At D23 in Anaheim on August 14, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige revealed the cast of the upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot, confirming Boyd as Ororo Munroe, the mutant known as Storm, in a film currently set for May 5, 2028.
That casting carries real weight given the character’s history on screen. Boyd steps into a role previously played by Halle Berry across four ‘X-Men’ films between 2000 and 2014, and by Alexandra Shipp, who portrayed a younger version of the character in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix.’ Now, a fresh pair of photos shared online has fans buzzing about her all over again.
The new images, posted herself on Instagram, show Boyd with voluminous natural curls, wearing a sheer black dress with an embellished bust and layered delicate necklaces. The look has continued a pattern that’s followed Boyd since her casting was announced, with fans consistently drawing comparisons between her real-life photos and her upcoming role as Storm.
That reaction isn’t new. Following an earlier Instagram carousel where Boyd posed in a beige-yellow dress, fans flooded the comments with thunderstorm and lightning bolt emojis, treating nearly every new photo as a preview of her performance before filming has even started.
Before her Marvel casting, Boyd built her career on the stage, making her Broadway debut in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ and later starring as Juliet Capulet in the Broadway production of ‘& Juliet.’ She also completed a run in ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’ alongside Taraji P. Henson and Cedric the Entertainer, giving her a substantial theater résumé heading into her first major film role.
Boyd has also shown fans she’s taking the comic book side of the role seriously, previously sharing an Instagram Story of herself holding an armful of Storm comics as part of her research process. Deadline reported that Boyd joins a cast that includes Christopher Abbott, Adam Driver and Inde Navarette, with the film directed by Jake Schreier.
Boyd’s casting has also resonated for reasons beyond the film itself, fulfilling years of fan requests for a dark-skinned Black actress to authentically portray Storm’s African heritage. In the comics, her white hair contrasted against her dark skin has long symbolized her connection to her lineage, and fans have been vocal for years about wanting an actress who visually reflects that character.
With the ‘X-Men’ reboot still roughly two years away, Boyd has plenty of time to build anticipation for the role, and if her early social media reception is any indication, audiences are already fully invested. Between her comic book prep and her growing online following, Boyd appears determined to earn the part before cameras even start rolling.
