Marvel’s X-Men Cast Reveal Might Finally Be Happening – Here’s When

Marvel Studios has spent years teasing the eventual return of its mutant heroes, and that anticipation reached a fever pitch heading into this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. With Kevin Feige repeatedly hinting that the X-Men would be central to the studio’s next era, fans went into the convention convinced this would finally be the moment casting details arrived.

That moment never came. Despite months of speculation, leaked meetings, and insider chatter naming a long list of potential mutants, Marvel’s Hall H panel focused almost entirely on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and surprise reveals like Ryan Gosling’s casting as Ghost Rider, leaving the X-Men conversation conspicuously untouched.

Now, according to a new report, that reveal may simply have been delayed rather than scrapped. Insider Daniel Richtman has indicated that Marvel is expected to announce the cast of its ‘X-Men’ reboot at D23, the Disney fan expo scheduled to take place from August 14 through 16 in Anaheim.

That timing would line up with growing speculation that Marvel deliberately held back its biggest mutant news for a different stage entirely. Rumors had already been circulating for weeks that casting on the project, directed by Jake Schreier, was well underway, with names like Bill Skarsgard, Adam Driver, Tom Pelphrey, Charles Melton, and Margot Robbie all tied to various roles at different points.

Reports from scooper Apocalyptic Horseman at Nexus Point News had specifically claimed the film would center on a lineup including Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm, Professor X, and Magneto. None of those names have been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios, and the studio has been notably cautious about letting any of the chatter get ahead of its own timeline.

Kevin Feige himself has worked to manage expectations in the days leading up to Comic Con, confirming publicly that the mutants will be recast entirely for this new film rather than folding in any of the actors currently appearing in ‘Avengers Doomsday’. That distinction matters given that Doomsday already features Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and Kelsey Grammer reprising their original Fox era X-Men roles one final time.

Feige has also addressed specific rumors head-on, including persistent chatter linking Adam Driver to the reboot. He confirmed that Marvel has reached out to Driver multiple times over the years, though the actor has consistently turned the studio down, describing it as something of a running joke between them rather than a serious ongoing negotiation.

Beyond casting, Feige has continued to frame the project as deeply personal, given that his very first producing credit was on the original 2000 ‘X-Men’ film that helped launch the modern superhero genre. He has described the opportunity to reintroduce these characters to a new generation as one of his longtime dreams finally coming true.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving this December and ‘Avengers Secret Wars’ following in 2027, the untitled ‘X-Men’ film is expected to launch the next chapter of the franchise sometime in 2028. If Richtman’s report proves accurate, D23 would give Marvel a controlled setting to finally confirm a cast that has been the subject of nonstop speculation for months.

For now, fans will simply have to wait and see whether Disney’s own convention becomes the venue where Marvel finally answers the question Comic Con left hanging. Given how carefully the studio has guarded this reveal so far, there is a good chance the wait will be worth it.
