Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Cyclops Rumor Just Took a Wild Twist as One Actor Denies It Outright

Casting speculation for Marvel’s mutant reboot has reached a fever pitch in recent weeks, with names circulating faster than the studio can keep quiet about them. Every confirmed piece of casting seems to spawn three new rumors, and nowhere has that chaos been more visible than around one particular role.

Cyclops has proven to be the most contested character in the entire rumor mill so far, cycling through more speculated names than perhaps any other role in the upcoming film. Unlike Jean Grey and Emma Frost, which have both landed relatively concrete castings in recent weeks, the leader of the X-Men has remained stubbornly up for grabs.

That uncertainty deepened further when Cooper Hoffman and Drew Starkey both surfaced as reportedly being in the running for the role, with one report claiming a source close to the story insisted Hoffman was “absolutely” playing Cyclops in the MCU. It seemed, for a moment, like the rumor mill had finally zeroed in on an answer.

Then Hoffman himself shut it down. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet for his film “I Want Your Sex,” Hoffman was asked directly about the Cyclops speculation and responded bluntly, saying, “Not going to be me,” while adding that stuff like this just “spreads” regardless of whether it’s true.

Hoffman didn’t stop there, either. He doubled down on denying the rumors again in a separate interview, this time using the moment to pivot the conversation toward an unrelated, unannounced project involving Chase Infiniti and director Luca Guadagnino, seemingly eager to redirect attention away from the X-Men speculation entirely.

That kind of direct denial from an actor is relatively rare in the current climate of Marvel casting rumors, where most attached names simply decline to comment rather than shoot things down outright. Hoffman’s blunt response leaves Starkey as the more plausible remaining option between the two names floated in the same report, though nothing concrete has emerged confirming him either.

The Cyclops search has been messy well before this latest development, too. Names ranging from Henry Cavill to various other young actors have been floated at different points throughout the ongoing casting process, none of which have resulted in any official confirmation from Marvel Studios.

This latest wrinkle arrives during an otherwise active stretch for X-Men casting news, following the confirmed onscreen debut of Sadie Sink as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and reports that Samara Weaving has landed the role of Emma Frost. Those two castings have set expectations high for the rest of the roster, making Hoffman’s flat denial feel like a genuine setback for fans hoping the Cyclops mystery was finally solved.

With Disney’s D23 event coming up later this month, industry chatter continues to suggest Marvel is holding back a fuller cast reveal for that stage. Whether Cyclops ends up being part of that announcement, or remains one of the rumor mill’s more stubborn mysteries, still seems very much up in the air.
