Marvel’s X-Men Reboot Hits a Casting Snag as One Star Reportedly Exits Ahead of D23
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been building toward its next big era for months, and few upcoming projects carry as much weight as the studio’s planned ‘X-Men‘ reboot. After years of anticipation, the film is shaping up to be one of the centerpieces of Marvel’s post-‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ lineup.
With D23 set to take over Anaheim from August 14 through 16, expectations have been running high that Marvel would use the fan convention to finally unveil the film’s ensemble cast. Reports have already indicated that Sadie Sink, Samara Weaving, and Kit Cooper are locked into the movie, fueling speculation about who else might round out the roster.
That momentum hit a snag this week, though. Charles Melton, long rumored as the frontrunner to play Hank McCoy, has reportedly dropped out of the film, according to industry insider Daniel Richtman, whose report was shared widely by fan accounts including X-Men Updates. The account’s post noted that the full cast reveal originally expected at D23 “may no longer happen” as a result.
Melton had been tied to the role of Beast for roughly two months, with the casting buzz generating largely positive reactions from fans online. He had even slyly acknowledged the rumors himself last month, which only added fuel to the speculation that his casting was close to a done deal before this reported change of plans.
It remains unclear exactly why Melton has stepped away from the project, and Marvel has not issued any official comment on the situation. Still, insiders suggest the studio has other options on the table, including the possibility of finally confirming which villain Adam Driver is playing if a full cast reveal doesn’t come together in time.
Even if Beast’s casting remains unresolved, Marvel could still use D23 to showcase a partial lineup and generate buzz, especially if Driver’s role gets confirmed alongside the actors already reported as locked in. Given how much anticipation has built around this project, even a scaled-back announcement would likely dominate headlines coming out of the convention.
The film itself is being directed by Jake Schreier, fresh off ‘Thunderbolts*’, with a screenplay from Michael Lesslie and additional writing from Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo. It’s expected to hit theaters in 2028, positioned as a cornerstone of the MCU’s next chapter following ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been careful about how he frames the project, resisting the word “reboot” even as the studio prepares to recast the X-Men entirely. “Reboot is a scary word,” Feige said in a wide-ranging conversation with press. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines.”
Feige has also indicated the new take will lean into younger characters, tying the story back to the X-Men’s roots as a franchise about outsiders finding their place in the world. That thematic focus, combined with the shakeup in casting, suggests this version of the team could look and feel very different from anything audiences have seen before.
For now, fans are left waiting to see whether Marvel can smooth things over before the convention doors open, or whether this casting hiccup will force a delay in the big reveal. Either way, all eyes will be on Anaheim in the coming days.
