Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot Isn’t Done with ‘Beef’ Star Cailee Spaeny Just Yet – According to New Reports
Marvel Studios’ live-action ‘X-Men‘ reboot has spent the past several months turning into one of the most closely tracked casting sagas in the entire MCU, with new names surfacing almost weekly as the studio quietly assembles its mutant lineup. Every rumor, denial, and half-confirmed report has kept fans refreshing their timelines, hoping to piece together who will actually make it into director Jake Schreier’s film.
Cailee Spaeny has been at the center of that speculation for weeks, ever since her name first surfaced as a frontrunner for one of the franchise’s most iconic roles. Industry insider Jeff Sneider had reported that the ‘Civil War’ and ‘Alien: Romulus’ star was nearing the finish line to play Rogue, and much of the fandom had already treated the casting as close to a done deal heading into Marvel’s D23 presentation.
That’s what makes the latest update notable. According to a post from the X/Twitter account Cosmic Marvel, citing a report from Knight Edge Media, Spaeny is reportedly still in talks with Marvel Studios for a role in the ‘X-Men’ reboot, even after missing out on the part fans expected her to land. The Rogue role ultimately went to Inde Navarrette, the ‘Obsession’ breakout who had been quietly linked to the project since revealing she had met with Schreier, leaving Spaeny’s status as an open question rather than a closed door.
Rather than exiting the conversation entirely, Spaeny appears to be in the mix for a different mutant altogether. Knight Edge Media reports she’s now discussing another role in the reboot, with Magik emerging as one possibility that would let her draw on the horror instincts she sharpened in ‘Alien: Romulus.’ Kitty Pryde and Polaris have also been floated as alternatives, though nothing has been confirmed by Marvel Studios itself.
The timing lines up with a chaotic summer of overlapping X-Men rumors. Spaeny’s name first entered the Rogue conversation alongside a crowded list of contenders that included Odessa A’zion, Sophie Thatcher, Margaret Qualley, and Hunter Schafer, each surfacing at different points as insiders raced to get ahead of the studio’s eventual announcement.
Fan reaction to Spaeny potentially staying in the franchise has been largely enthusiastic, even with the specific role still unsettled. Much of the fandom had rallied hard behind her as Rogue earlier this year, and losing that part to Navarrette didn’t necessarily cool interest in seeing her join the ensemble in some capacity.
Marvel’s mutant reset has already locked down several major names, giving some shape to what the finished roster might look like. Charles Melton is reportedly finalizing a deal to play Beast, while Kit Connor has been confirmed as Cyclops after also being considered for the role early on. Samara Weaving’s casting as Emma Frost and Sadie Sink stepping into Jean Grey rounded out the film’s early wave of announcements.
Not every thread of the casting rumor mill has held up cleanly, though, which is worth keeping in mind here too. Sneider himself later expressed uncertainty about whether Rogue would even factor meaningfully into the film’s story, a reminder that even well-sourced reports in this cycle have shifted quickly as negotiations play out behind closed doors.
Marvel Studios’ untitled ‘X-Men’ reboot is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028, which leaves plenty of runway for Spaeny’s situation, and the rest of the cast, to keep evolving before anything becomes official. For now, the door on her joining the mutant team remains open, just not in the role most fans originally expected.
If Cailee Spaeny joins Marvel's new X-Men, which role would you want her to play?
