Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot May Have Just Found Its Cinematographer

Marvel Studios spent Friday night finally giving fans concrete answers about its long-gestating ‘X-Men‘ reboot, unveiling a seven-person cast during a showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Director Jake Schreier took the stage alongside Kevin Feige as the studio confirmed a May 5, 2028 release date, marking the first X-Men film built entirely around a fresh mutant roster since Disney acquired Fox back in 2019, with the movie arriving after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

That casting reveal answered one major question about the film’s direction, but plenty of behind-the-scenes details are still coming together as production ramps up. Sadie Sink, who already debuted as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ welcomed her new co-stars to the stage during the panel, telling the crowd, “We’re here to talk about the X-Men. Should we meet some more of the cast?”

Now, a new report suggests the film may have quietly locked in its cinematographer as well. According to a post from industry watcher Christopher Marc, Pat Scola, known for his work on ‘Pig,’ ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ ‘Sing Sing,’ and ‘The Death of Robin Hood,’ appears set to serve as director of photography on the project. Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed the report, meaning Scola’s involvement should currently be treated as an unconfirmed but credible rumor rather than a locked announcement.

Scola has built a reputation over the past several years for grounded, character-driven visual work rather than traditional blockbuster spectacle, a style that could signal an intentional creative direction for how Schreier wants the reboot to look and feel. His credits span everything from Michael Sarnoski’s quiet character study ‘Pig’ to the high-stakes horror prequel ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ giving him range across both intimate drama and large-scale genre filmmaking.

The X-Men lineup revealed at D23 includes Kit Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm, alongside Sink’s returning Jean Grey. The panel saved its biggest surprise for the very end, when Adam Driver crashed the presentation through a video message to reveal he’ll play a villain named Nathaniel Milbury rather than the fan-favorite mutant antagonist many had speculated about.

Feige indicated during the panel that additional casting announcements are still on the way, suggesting the roster revealed at D23 represents only the beginning of the film’s ensemble. Schreier previously described his approach to the material as one balancing ideology with the interpersonal, soap-opera-style drama that has long defined the X-Men comics, saying that writers who understand how to drive that ideology from personal stakes will be what feels most honest to the source material.

This new film marks Marvel Studios’ first attempt at building an original X-Men team within the MCU proper, distinct from the Fox-era mutants already folded into the franchise through 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ That earlier film brought back Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine alongside several mutants pulled from the original Fox franchise, while ‘Doomsday’ itself is set to feature Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and other veteran X-Men actors reprising their classic roles.

With a cinematographer possibly locked in and a cast now fully public, the reboot appears to be moving steadily toward production ahead of its 2028 release.
