Marvel’s X-Men Reboot Reportedly Gets a Release Date — Here’s When It’s Coming
It looks like the X-Men are finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After years of waiting, a new report suggests that Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot now has a release date.
According to journalist Jeff Sneider, who shared the news on his show The Hot Mic, the upcoming X-Men movie is expected to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
He explained that Disney currently has three dates set aside for Marvel films that year, February 18, May 5, and November 10, and that the May slot has been reserved for the X-Men’s MCU debut.
The timing makes sense. That date marks the 20th anniversary of the MCU, which started in May 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man.
If Avengers: Secret Wars, set for December 2027, wraps up the current Marvel storyline, this new X-Men film will reportedly begin the next chapter. Disney is said to have high expectations for it, seeing it as a way to launch a fresh era focused on a new generation of superheroes.
The movie will be directed by Jake Schreier, who is also behind Thunderbolts*. Reports say Schreier got the job after Marvel was impressed with his work on that film. The script is being written by Michael Lesslie, who officially came on board in 2025 after starting talks the previous year.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige first mentioned plans to bring mutants into the MCU back at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019.
He said at the time that mutants and X-Men are interchangeable terms, and promised that Marvel’s version would stand apart from the older 20th Century Fox films.
Feige has also confirmed that this reboot will not bring back the old cast. Instead, it will feature a brand-new lineup of younger mutants. He described it as “a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.
In recent years, Marvel has already teased the idea of mutants through smaller appearances in its shows and movies, especially as the Multiverse Saga unfolded. Once Secret Wars “resets” the universe, the X-Men are expected to take center stage in a new wave of Marvel storytelling.
If Sneider’s report is accurate, fans can expect to see Marvel’s new X-Men movie in theaters on May 5, 2028, a symbolic date marking both the end of one Marvel era and the start of another.
