Marvel’s X-Men Reboot’s Beast Search Hits Snag as Charles Melton’s Casting Reportedly Stalls Over Money

Marvel Studios has spent months building quiet momentum toward assembling its ‘X-Men‘ reboot, carefully confirming pieces of the roster while letting speculation fill in the rest. Kit Connor’s Cyclops, Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey and Samara Weaving’s Emma Frost are locked in, giving fans a clearer picture of Jake Schreier’s vision even as key roles remained open.

Beast has been the role fueling the most chatter. Charles Melton, the Emmy-nominated ‘Beef’ actor, emerged as the presumed frontrunner for Hank McCoy weeks ago, with multiple insiders suggesting his deal was close to finalized ahead of Disney’s D23 event.

Melton is “reportedly still in talks” for Beast, with a source close to the situation indicating the deal isn’t as settled as fans assumed, reportedly over compensation.

The update follows a chaotic 48 hours of conflicting casting reports. Industry insider Daniel Richtman had suggested through intermediary accounts that Melton had passed on the role entirely, a claim that spread rapidly across social media and cast doubt on whether Marvel’s full ‘X-Men’ roster would be ready in time for D23.

The confusion traces back to competing accounts of Melton’s status. MyTimeToShineHello had previously reported that Melton’s deal was closed, while journalist Jeff Sneider’s newsletter, The InSneider, indicated Melton was simply one of several actors still reading for the part, alongside ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ star Peter Claffey.

Richtman later clarified that his information about Melton’s status had only been shared privately and was not confirmed at 100 percent, adding that Cailee Spaeny’s rumored casting as Rogue is similarly unresolved. That walk-back left the door open for the newest claim, that talks with Melton are ongoing rather than dead, just complicated by contract terms.

Melton himself has stayed coy on the subject. In a July interview promoting Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Her Private Hell,’ the actor was asked directly about the Beast rumors and responded by joking he didn’t know who the director was, despite having previously worked with Schreier on ‘Beef’ Season 2. He did admit, without confirming any deal, that he’d be interested in playing the character.

Beyond Beast and Rogue, several other major roles remain in flux. Names like Christopher Abbott, Tom Pelphrey, Bill Skarsgård, Will Poulter and Harris Dickinson have all been floated for Professor X, while Adam Driver is rumored for an unspecified villain part possibly tied to Mister Sinister or Sebastian Shaw.

None of those castings, including Melton’s, have been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios or Disney. The studio has not commented publicly on the negotiation reports, and Melton has not addressed the latest claims about a stalled deal.

The timing adds extra pressure. Marvel had reportedly hoped to unveil its full ‘X-Men’ cast at D23, using the panel to solidify excitement for a project positioned as a major post-‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ tentpole. If Beast negotiations are genuinely hung up on money, that announcement could slip or arrive with a gap where Hank McCoy should be.

For a franchise reboot this anticipated, every unresolved role becomes its own news cycle, and Beast has proven to be the most volatile of them all. Whether Melton ultimately signs on or Marvel moves to another actor, the character remains one of the most closely watched pieces of the puzzle.
