‘Masters of the Universe’ Director Already Has Big Sequel Plans — And He Knows Exactly What He Wants to Explore
The upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe will hit theaters soon, but director Travis Knight is already thinking ahead. In a recent roundtable interview reported by ScreenRant, Knight talked openly about what he would want to explore in a possible sequel if the first film is successful.
The movie, which is set to release on June 5, 2026, follows Prince Adam as he becomes He-Man and fights to save Eternia from Skeletor. The cast includes actors like Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, along with other major stars bringing the world of Eternia to life.
Even though the film has not been released yet, Knight already has ideas for where the story could go next. He said that if a sequel ever happens, he wants to focus more on the character growth of Adam after he fully becomes He-Man. He is also interested in how the relationships in the story would change after the big events of the first movie.
Knight explained his thoughts during the interview, saying, “I think about what happens next for Adam. Where’s the next stage of his life take him now that he’s properly He-Man? What does that mean?”
He also added that the heart of the story is not just action or battles, but the relationships between the characters. He said that any future story would depend on how those relationships evolve after the events of the first film.
The director was also very honest about the fact that a sequel is not guaranteed. According to the same ScreenRant report, Knight made it clear that everything depends on audience reaction and box office performance. He said the future of the franchise is not in the filmmakers’ control.
“Ultimately, this stuff is not in our hands. So as much as we would like to tell more of these stories, if the world doesn’t want them, we won’t tell them. But if the world demands more of them, we’d be very lucky to be able to tell more stories in this universe,” Knight said.
Before thinking too far ahead, Knight said his main focus is still the first film. He explained that when he started working on the project, he treated it like it might be his only chance to make a Masters of the Universe movie. Because of that, he wanted to put everything he had into it.
He described the film as something made with full effort from the cast and crew. Knight said he is proud of the emotional side of the story and the heart behind the action. His goal was to bring a meaningful version of Eternia to the big screen that could stand on its own, even without sequels.
The story of Masters of the Universe itself comes from the long-running Mattel franchise that began in the 1980s. It has been adapted into cartoons, comics, and even a previous live-action film in 1987. That version starred Dolph Lundgren and became a cult classic despite mixed reactions at the time.
Now, this new version aims to restart the franchise with a modern take. With production handled by Amazon MGM Studios and a large ensemble cast, the film is positioned as a major fantasy release for 2026.
If the movie performs well, Knight already has a clear direction in mind. He wants to go deeper into Adam’s journey as He-Man and explore how becoming a hero changes his relationships and responsibilities. For now, though, everything depends on how audiences respond when the film finally arrives in theaters.
