Matt Damon Opens Up About Being Shut Down by Clint Eastwood While Filming
Matt Damon recently shared a behind the scenes story about working with Clint Eastwood, and it says a lot about how different directors run a movie set. The actor told the story while appearing on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, where he looked back on filming the 2009 movie Invictus.
In the film, Damon played South African rugby star Francois Pienaar. The role came with a big challenge. He had to learn a very specific accent. Damon said he spent six months training with dialogue coach Tim Monich. He practiced all day, every day, leading up to the shoot. During the podcast, he explained the struggle by saying, South Africans speak English, but it’s like their tongue does the exact opposite thing that ours does.
When filming began, Damon felt ready. He said he arrived on set with several ways to say his lines and was excited to try them out. But that plan ended fast. After the first take, Eastwood called for the crew to move on. Damon, surprised, asked if they could do another take.
Eastwood shut it down immediately. According to Damon, the director responded with, Why You Wanna Waste Everybody’s Time The moment caught Damon off guard, especially since Eastwood was someone he deeply admired.
Looking back, Damon said he later understood what Eastwood meant. He explained that the director’s style is built around respect for the crew. He described Eastwood as calm and kind, even in moments that felt blunt at first. There was a kindness to the words, Damon said, adding that Eastwood is a lovely person once you understand how he works.
Damon also shared that Eastwood’s famous one take style is not a hard rule. When they worked together again on the 2010 film Hereafter, Damon saw Eastwood spend around forty takes on a scene that involved a young actor with no previous experience.
Today, Damon is riding a strong wave of success. His latest film, The Rip, was released on Netflix on January 16 and quickly climbed to the top of the streaming charts. The crime thriller stars Damon and Ben Affleck as Miami narcotics officers who uncover a large stash of cash. The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, and Kyle Chandler.
Looking ahead, Damon has another major project on the way. He will star as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is set to hit theaters on July 17. The large scale film also stars Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya.
The story Damon shared offers a clear look at how different directors approach their work. Some move fast and trust the moment. Others take their time chasing perfection. Damon’s experience shows that both styles can work, depending on who is behind the camera.
