Matthew McConaughey Hints at Possible Return to His Most Acclaimed TV Role
Matthew McConaughey is open to stepping back into the world of “True Detective,” the HBO series that launched his career resurgence in the early 2010s.
Speaking about the upcoming fifth season, McConaughey expressed excitement over his friend Nicolas Cage taking the lead. “He’s a great actor, and I’d like to see him in that world,” he said.
The actor also left the door open for a return as Rust Cohle, the brooding detective he portrayed in the show’s first season.
“We nailed that first season,” McConaughey said. “But if it’s a script like that first one, with that fire and originality, I’d do it. And you talk about monologues. Well, Rust Cohle had a monologue. He talked about everything that was inside him, and he didn’t care if you were listening or not. There’s freedom in that.”
The first season of “True Detective” was widely praised for its acting, writing, cinematography, and direction. While the second season divided critics, it still drew strong viewership. Season three received positive reviews, though fewer viewers tuned in.
The fourth season, “Night Country,” became the most-watched season and earned critical acclaim along with the highest number of Emmy nominations for the series.
HBO is moving forward with a fifth season, with showrunner López returning. Production is set to begin in 2025, with the new season scheduled to air in 2027. Oscar winner Nicolas Cage is in talks to star, and according to reports, the upcoming season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York.
Cage has been interested in the part for some time, but it is still unclear if the deal will be finalized. Another Oscar winner, Jodie Foster, also took a long time to close her deal for Season 4.
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, said, “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
