Maya Boyd Meets Her Match: ‘X-Men’ Storm Star Comes Face-to-Face With a Towering Mural of Ororo Munroe
Some casting announcements take a while to sink in. For Maya Boyd, the road from Broadway stage to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a whirlwind, and the 23-year-old has spent weeks making the most of her new status on social media. Her feed has become a running diary of someone getting to know a legendary character.
That diary has delivered a few good moments so far. She swapped her Instagram bio for lightning bolt emojis within hours of the reveal, and she has shared a stack of comics to show she’s doing her homework. Each post has drawn a wave of fan attention, and the latest may be the best yet.
The Maya Boyd Storm mural moment has fans buzzing. In a new Instagram video, Boyd gazes up at a towering street mural of Ororo Munroe, complete with flowing white hair and the X insignia across her chest. A playful hello caption sells the idea of a casual encounter, and the sunlight-dappled wall makes Storm look like she’s looking right back.

Boyd’s casting was revealed at Disney’s D23 event in August, when Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige unveiled the first wave of the new ‘X-Men’ cast. The film marks her feature debut, and she is the third actor to play Storm in a major live-action ‘X-Men’ film series. Halle Berry played the character across 4 films between 2000 and 2014, while Alexandra Shipp portrayed a younger version in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘Dark Phoenix.’
Boyd comes from the stage. She is known for playing Juliet in ‘& Juliet’ and appeared alongside Taraji P. Henson in an adaptation of ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.’ One profile noted she was doing 8 Broadway shows a week before Marvel came calling.
The announcement landed with extra weight because of what fans had been asking for. Years of online discussion pushed for an actress who more closely reflects Storm as she appears on the comic page, a Kenyan-born mutant with white hair and dark skin. Boyd is being described as the first darker-skinned actress to portray the character in a live-action feature film.
Fans have also been making visual comparisons. One viral post placed her photo next to a comic illustration of Storm, arguing the 2 looked like the same person. That’s the kind of reaction the mural photo is feeding.
Boyd has been visibly leaning into the role. Shortly after the announcement, she shared an Instagram story showing herself holding a thick stack of Storm comics, including recent issues of Marvel’s ongoing solo series and the 2024 launch issue written by Murewa Ayodele with art by Lucas Werneck. It was a small gesture, but fans read it as a promising sign.
She also thanked fans on Instagram, telling them it was an honor to be their Storm, and her follower count reportedly jumped to nearly 100,000 within hours of the reveal. Since then, she has made a polished Paris Fashion Week debut at Louis Vuitton and shared a series of style photos that fans keep tying back to her mutant alter ego.
Boyd isn’t walking into the mutant team alone. The cast revealed at D23 includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost and Inde Navarrette as Rogue. Adam Driver is set to play the villain Mister Sinister.
Jake Schreier is directing the film, which arrives in theaters on May 5, 2028. It’s still untitled, and Marvel has said little beyond the cast so far. For fans, that makes Boyd’s social posts one of the few windows into the project.
On the surface, a photo of an actress looking at a wall painting is a small thing. But Storm is one of the most important characters in the ‘X-Men’ mythology, and the role carries enormous responsibility for a newcomer. The image captures that tension in a single frame: a young actress meeting the icon she is about to bring to life.
It’s also a clever bit of free marketing for the film, arriving more than a year and a half before release. With the franchise’s new faces still largely unseen, moments like this keep the buzz alive without a single frame of footage.
