Mckenna Grace has spent most of her life in front of a camera, and she has had plenty of time to figure out what she will and won’t do there. Now 20, the actress is on the biggest press tour of her career, and the questions are getting more personal. Her answer on nude scenes has become one of the more talked-about moments of the run.

Grace is promoting ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping‘, which opens on November 20. The prequel is set 24 years before the original story and follows a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, as he enters the arena. Grace plays Maysilee Donner, a fellow District 12 tribute who forms an unlikely alliance with him.

During the press run, she sat down with Cosmopolitan, where the interviewer asked whether there are any roles, inside or outside of fandoms, that she would turn down. Her answer was direct: at this point in her career, Grace does not do nudity or very hypersexual material. The comment has since been picked up widely, with Deadline and Variety among the outlets reporting it.

What stands out is the tone. Grace was careful to say she respects performers who are comfortable with that kind of work, and she did not frame her choice as a judgment on anyone else. She described the idea as terrifying for her personally, and she admitted she doesn’t know whether that will ever change.

That openness matters. Rather than presenting the boundary as a permanent rule, she framed it as where she stands right now. It reads as an honest self-assessment from someone who started acting young and is still working out what she wants from her adult career.

She also pushed back on the idea that her boundary means she only takes safe parts. Grace pointed to her horror work, noting that her character is killed by Ghostface in ‘Scream’. In other words, she is comfortable with intense, dark and physically demanding storytelling, just not with nudity.

Then came the part that gave the story its hook. Grace said her dream is to play a Disney princess someday, and that goal is part of why she steers clear of nude or hypersexual roles. It is a surprisingly earnest answer from an actress who has built a reputation as a modern scream queen.

That reputation was built across several major horror projects, alongside work in franchise films such as ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ and ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’. She is also a ‘Young Sheldon’ alum, and her career began at age five with a television commercial and a role on the Disney XD sitcom ‘Crash & Bernstein’. A move into Disney royalty would be a full-circle moment.

Fans appear to have responded warmly. Coverage has noted online praise for what some called her dignity, and the comments have largely supported her decision. The conversation fits a wider moment in which several actors have spoken about setting limits, including Amanda Seyfried, who said she passed on a show that would have required constant sex scenes.

In the same interview, Grace spoke about the shift from child actor to adult performer. She said it feels good to be an adult who can share her opinion and have more ownership over her characters. She has also enjoyed sitting down with producers to pitch her own ideas.

That ownership showed up on ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ too. Grace was making Hunger Games fan edits before she joined the cast, and she keeps a journal for her characters with pages for details fans hope to see. For Maysilee, she asked director Francis Lawrence for a braid and a pin, and she said having a say in those choices is one of the joys of working as an adult.

The film itself has a stacked ensemble. Alongside Zada and Grace, the cast includes Whitney Peak, Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, Elle Fanning, Glenn Close and others. The story covers the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

Taken together, Grace’s comments sketch a performer who knows her lane and is comfortable stating it. She wants range, she wants darker material when it suits her, and she wants the freedom to say no. That is a confident position for someone still early in an adult career.

Whether her boundary shifts over time is something only she can answer, and she said as much herself. For now, audiences will see her in a franchise blockbuster that puts her talent front and center. The conversation around her interview suggests plenty of fans are happy to take her at her word.

What do you think of Mckenna Grace's decision to avoid nude and highly sexualized scenes?
