Fashion has always been part of the ‘Hunger Games‘ experience. From Capitol extravagance on screen to carefully planned press-tour wardrobes off it, the franchise gives its stars plenty of room to play. When Rachel Zegler promoted ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’, she paid homage to Katniss multiple times, and fans noticed.

Now a new star is picking up that tradition. Mckenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner, one of Haymitch’s fellow District 12 tributes, in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’. Her role has been highly sought after, with reps reportedly seeing it as the closest thing to the Katniss role made famous by Jennifer Lawrence.

The press tour is under way, and Grace’s latest Mckenna Grace press look is already generating buzz. She appears in a set of photos with loose golden waves and a side braid decorated with butterfly clips, white daisies and pink flowers, all against a soft, romantic backdrop. The images appear to come from the Australia leg of the tour, where she wore an archival Vera Wang lace dress.

According to her stylist, Molly Dickson, the gown is a mauve lace design with a greyish ruffled flower on one shoulder and a peach lining underneath. Her jewelry came from Chopard, including floral diamond rings and earrings that echoed the blooms in her hair. The silver-set diamonds stood out without competing with the dress.

The beauty team helped sell the theme. Dickson credited Alan White for the hair and Molly Warkentin for the makeup. The overall effect feels right at home in the Capitol, with a mood that’s soft and whimsical.

This isn’t the first standout moment. The tour kicked off in Sydney on October 14, where Grace and co-star Joseph Zada posed beside Sydney Harbour with the Opera House behind them. She wore a pale pink floor-length gown by House of Gilles with intricate pleating and an asymmetrical one-shoulder neckline.

Her hair there featured a loose braid finished with a tiny pink bow, plus sparkling pink floral earrings by Anabela Chan. One outlet noted the braid as a nod to Katniss, though Maysilee also wears a braid in the film. It’s a clever bit of method dressing.

She has also gone full Katniss before. Grace wore a feathered Monique Lhuillier gown at a ‘Hunger Games’ exhibition in Paris, a recreation of Katniss Everdeen’s wedding dress from ‘Catching Fire’. The original gown was designed by Tex Saverio and sourced by Oscar-nominated costume designer Trish Summerville.

Maysilee is a pivotal figure in Suzanne Collins’ lore. She’s a tribute in the brutal Second Quarter Quell, and also the original owner of the Mockingjay pin that Katniss later wears. That connection is a big part of why the role carries so much weight.

Grace, who is 20, is best known for ‘Gifted’ and the recent ‘Ghostbusters’ films, where she played Phoebe Spengler. She has shared stories about how surreal filming the Reaping Day scene was, and how fun it was to be yelled at by Glenn Close. It sounds like the cast had a lot of fun, even with such serious subject matter.

Ralph Fiennes’ New Look as President Snow and Jesse Plemons’ Plutarch Heavensbee Revealed in Chilling ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Character Posters

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ revisits Panem 24 years before the events of ‘The Hunger Games’. It begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Zada plays young Haymitch Abernathy, with Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird.

The ensemble also includes Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman and Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle. Francis Lawrence directs from a screenplay by Billy Ray, and Lionsgate releases the film in theaters on November 20.

With more than a month to go, Grace’s wardrobe is keeping the franchise in the conversation. If this is the standard for the rest of the tour, expect more looks that fans will want to dissect.
