An MCU star is set to take on the iconic role of Tony Montana in a new Scarface remake, bringing fresh energy to the classic story.

The 1983 crime drama directed by Brian De Palma was itself a remake of the 1932 original, both based on the 1930 novel of the same name.

Scarface tells the story of a Cuban immigrant who rises to power as a Miami drug lord, struggling with ambition, power, and addiction. While the original film received mixed reviews upon release, it has since become a legendary crime movie.

According to Deadline, Danny Ramirez, who plays Joaquin Torres in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is attached to star as Tony Montana.

Ramirez is developing the project alongside Tom Culliver through their production company, Pinstripes. The duo described their goal as creating a modernized take on Scarface that draws inspiration from the original novel rather than simply copying the 1983 movie.

“One of the larger pieces of IP that we’re adapting at the minute is Scarface. Obviously, Danny will play Scarface. We want to modernize it, adapting the original novel,” Culliver said.

He emphasized that the film will bring a fresh perspective: “We’re not going to engage on something if we don’t have a totally unique, fresh way into it. You don’t want to do stuff where you’re just remaking stuff for remakes’ sake. We’re not going to do this cravenly; we have something to say with the material.”

Ramirez also commented on the relevance of the story today. “Scarface, to us, is the one that it’s been a dream role to play, but also to develop it in a way that I understand it. I think in 2025, it’s more relevant now than ever. So that’s where we’re excited to take this on,” he said.

The Scarface remake has a long and complicated history. Universal first began developing a new version in 2011, promising a story that was neither a direct sequel nor a remake but would incorporate elements of both the 1932 and 1983 films.

Over the years, several directors and writers were attached, including Pablo Larraín, Antoine Fuqua, David Ayer, and Luca Guadagnino, with screenplays by the Coen brothers and Terence Winter at various stages. Diego Luna was also cast in the lead at one point, and the film was originally planned for a 2018 release.

Despite the shifting plans, Ramirez and Culliver are determined to bring their own vision to the project. They want a story that feels original while honoring the legacy of Scarface. “We’re independently developing it; we have some development financing in place. Obviously, there’s the Pacino legacy of it from the ’80s and then the original 1932 movie, but I think it’s ripe for modernizing, and to have someone like Danny in the lead is really exciting,” Culliver added.

This new adaptation promises to offer audiences a fresh perspective on the classic tale of ambition and crime, with an MCU star leading the charge.

Personally, I think this modern take could be a bold and exciting reinvention of the story, giving Tony Montana a contemporary edge while respecting the iconic legacy. What do you think about Danny Ramirez taking on this legendary role? Share your thoughts in the comments.
