The Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought many beloved comic book characters to life on the big screen. In the process of adapting these characters, their powers and abilities are often changed. For various storytelling reasons, some of the most powerful heroes and villains from the comics are depicted as significantly weaker in the movies. This listicle explores 15 such characters whose power levels in the MCU don’t quite match up to their comic book origins.

Adapting characters for film is a complex process. What works on the pages of a comic book might not always translate well to a live-action movie. Filmmakers often need to ground characters in a more believable reality, which can mean toning down their more extreme powers. This can create more compelling conflicts and higher stakes for the heroes. While these characters are still impressive in the MCU, their comic book versions possess a level of power that is often on a cosmic scale.

Hulk

In the MCU, the Hulk is a founding Avenger known for his immense strength. He has had many impressive moments, such as taking down a massive Chitauri Leviathan in a single blow. However, he has also been defeated by characters like Iron Man in his Hulkbuster armor and was easily bested by Thanos, making his power seem inconsistent.

By contrast, the Hulk in the comics has strength that is virtually without limit, growing more powerful as his anger increases. He has accomplished feats far beyond anything seen in the movies, such as destroying planets and punching through the fabric of time itself. The comic book Hulk is often considered one of the most physically powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, a status the MCU has only hinted at.

Thor

Marvel

Thor in the MCU is the mighty God of Thunder, capable of summoning lightning and wielding powerful enchanted weapons like Mjolnir and Stormbreaker. He has faced numerous powerful enemies and even withstood the full force of a neutron star. Despite these impressive feats, he often struggles against foes that his comic counterpart would likely defeat with greater ease.

In the source material, Thor’s power is on an entirely different level. He can shatter planets, move at speeds faster than light, and has access to the Odinforce, a nearly infinite source of cosmic and magical energy. This power has allowed him to battle cosmic entities such as Galactus, solidifying his status as one of Marvel’s strongest heroes.

Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, is one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. Her abilities include reality manipulation, telekinesis, and powerful energy projection. Her power grew substantially throughout her appearances, culminating in her ability to create an entirely new reality in the town of Westview.

However, her power in the comics is even more immense. The comic book Scarlet Witch can alter reality on a multiversal scale. In one of her most famous storylines, she erased the powers of nearly all mutants on Earth by simply saying, “No more mutants.” Her mastery of chaos magic makes her one of the most formidable and unpredictable forces in the Marvel universe.

Vision

Vision
Marvel

The Vision in the MCU was a unique creation, born from a combination of Wakandan vibranium, the Mind Stone, and advanced artificial intelligence. His powers included superhuman strength, the ability to phase through matter, and the capacity to fire energy blasts. Despite these abilities, he was often shown to be vulnerable and was ultimately destroyed.

In the comics, Vision is a much more powerful and resilient character. His control over his own density allows him to become diamond-hard and virtually invulnerable or completely intangible. He is also a brilliant tactician and a long-standing member of the Avengers, with a power level that far exceeds what was depicted on screen.

Drax the Destroyer

In the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Drax is portrayed as a fierce warrior driven by the loss of his family. He possesses superhuman strength and durability, but much of his character is used for comedic effect. While a capable fighter, he is frequently outmatched by more powerful villains.

The original comic book version of Drax was a being created with the sole purpose of destroying Thanos. His powers included flight, the ability to project cosmic energy blasts, and the strength to rival the Hulk. In one notable comic storyline, he succeeded in his mission by ripping the Mad Titan’s heart out.

Gamora

Gamora
Marvel

Known as the “deadliest woman in the galaxy,” the MCU’s Gamora is a highly skilled assassin and a core member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. After being trained by Thanos, she became an expert in various forms of combat, but her abilities are largely grounded in physical skill.

In the comics, Gamora’s powers go far beyond simple combat training. Thanos enhanced her with cybernetics, granting her superhuman strength, speed, and a healing factor that makes her incredibly difficult to injure or kill. She is a master of numerous martial arts from across the galaxy, allowing her to defeat opponents who are physically superior.

Quicksilver

Pietro Maximoff, known as Quicksilver, made a brief but memorable appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He possessed superhuman speed, which he used to great effect against Ultron’s forces. However, his MCU incarnation was not fast enough to dodge a barrage of bullets and was killed.

His comic book counterpart is significantly more powerful and experienced. In the comics, Quicksilver’s speed is so great that he can perform feats such as running up walls and across water. He also possesses enhanced strength due to his high-speed movements, and at times has shown the ability to vibrate his molecules to pass through solid objects.

Ultron

Ultron
Marvel

The main antagonist of Avengers: Age of Ultron, this sentient AI was a formidable threat. He was housed in a vibranium body and commanded a massive army of robotic drones. While he posed a significant challenge to the Avengers, he was ultimately defeated within the runtime of a single film.

In the comics, Ultron is one of the Avengers’ most persistent and dangerous foes. In the storyline that shares the movie’s name, Ultron actually succeeded in conquering the world. His body is typically forged from adamantium, a virtually indestructible metal, and he constantly upgrades himself, making him an ever-evolving threat that the heroes have struggled to defeat on numerous occasions.

Odin

Odin
Marvel

Odin in the MCU was presented as the wise and powerful ruler of Asgard, but his most powerful days were behind him. He was shown to be weakened by age and was eventually overcome by his own fading life force, making way for new threats to emerge.

The Odin of the comics, however, is a being of immense power. As the wielder of the Odinforce, he is capable of destroying entire galaxies and battling cosmic beings. His power is far beyond what was shown in the films, where his abilities were significantly downplayed to fit the narrative.

Black Bolt

Black Bolt
Marvel

Black Bolt made a brief but impactful appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As the king of the Inhumans, his voice is his ultimate weapon, capable of unleashing devastating sonic energy. Despite this incredible power, his appearance was short-lived as he was quickly dispatched.

In the comics, Black Bolt is a true powerhouse. A mere whisper from him can level a city, and a full scream can shatter planets. Beyond his voice, he possesses superhuman strength and durability, allowing him to engage in physical combat with the likes of the Hulk and Thanos. His MCU portrayal only scratched the surface of his true capabilities.

Malekith

Malekith
Marvel

The leader of the Dark Elves and the primary villain of Thor: The Dark World, Malekith’s power in the MCU was largely tied to the Aether, one of the Infinity Stones. Without it, he was a capable fighter, but he was ultimately defeated by Thor and his allies.

In Marvel comics, Malekith is a powerful sorcerer in his own right, with a vast array of magical abilities. He also possesses superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to shapeshift. He is a cunning and cruel villain who has been a major antagonist to Thor for decades, often without the need for cosmic artifacts to bolster his power.

Ronan the Accuser

Ronan the Accuser
Marvel

Ronan was the main villain in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. A radical Kree warrior, he wielded a powerful Cosmi-Rod and sought to destroy the planet Xandar. While formidable, his power was greatly amplified when he obtained the Power Stone.

His comic book counterpart is a much more imposing figure within the Kree Empire. As the Supreme Accuser, he holds one of the highest ranks in his society. His personal weapon, the Universal Weapon, is a tool of incredible power, capable of manipulating energy, creating force fields, and altering matter, making him a galactic threat even without an Infinity Stone.

Mantis

Mantis
Marvel

In the MCU, Mantis is an empath with the ability to sense and alter the emotions of others. While she demonstrated great potential by temporarily subduing the celestial Ego, her role has primarily been a non-combat one, providing emotional support and occasional assistance.

The Mantis of the comics is a far more capable and versatile character. In addition to her powerful empathic and telepathic abilities, she is a grandmaster of martial arts, capable of defeating highly skilled opponents like Captain America and Thor. She also has abilities such as astral projection and control over plant life, making her a much more powerful member of the Guardians.

Taskmaster

Taskmaster
Marvel

The Taskmaster in Black Widow was a silent, relentless assassin with the ability to perfectly mimic the fighting styles of others. This power was a result of technological implants and psychological conditioning. While a dangerous foe, the character’s origins and identity were significantly altered from the comics.

In the comics, Taskmaster is a man named Tony Masters who possesses natural photographic reflexes. He is a master of thousands of fighting styles and has served as a training instructor for countless villains and henchmen. His ability to predict his opponents’ moves makes him one of the most skilled and dangerous hand-to-hand combatants in the Marvel Universe.

Heimdall

Heimdall
Marvel

The all-seeing guardian of Asgard’s Bifrost Bridge, Heimdall was a loyal and brave warrior in the MCU. His enhanced senses allowed him to see and hear across the Nine Realms, and he was a skilled combatant with superhuman strength. Despite his abilities, he met his end at the hands of Thanos.

In the comics, Heimdall’s powers are even greater. His senses are so powerful that he can perceive events across dimensions and time. He is one of the most powerful Asgardians, second only to Odin and Thor in strength, and has at times wielded cosmic powers that allow him to channel the energy of stars. This makes his on-screen depiction a much-reduced version of the comic book character.
