It looks like Thunderbolts* might be heading to Disney+ very soon. According to a new commercial that’s been airing in Greece, the Marvel movie is rumored to start streaming on Wednesday, August 27. If this is true, it would mark the longest gap between a Marvel movie’s theatrical release and its Disney+ debut, 117 days.

That’s a bigger wait than we’ve seen before. For example, Captain America: Brave New World took 103 days to hit Disney+, Deadpool & Wolverine had a 110-day gap, and The Marvels came to the platform after just 92 days.

Thunderbolts* first hit theaters on May 2, 2025, after its world premiere in London on April 22. It’s the 36th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the final one in Phase Five. The movie was directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, with help from Lee Sung Jin, who came on board after working with Schreier on Beef. The cast is full of familiar faces, including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, David Harbour, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The story follows a team of antiheroes who get trapped in a deadly situation and are forced to work together on a dangerous mission. It’s a darker, more intense take compared to the usual MCU vibe.

During the marketing campaign, the film’s title, Thunderbolts* with an asterisk, got people talking. That little star wasn’t just for style. At the end of the movie, there’s a reveal: the team gets renamed as the New Avengers. After that, the title actually changes to The New Avengers during the credits and in some of the promos that followed.

Despite solid reviews from critics, the movie didn’t do as well at the box office. As of the end of July 2025, it earned around $382.4 million worldwide, with $190.3 million from the U.S. and Canada and $192.2 million from other countries. According to reports, the movie needed to hit $425 million just to break even. They even described that goal as “unachievable.”

Still, reviews were mostly positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, 88% of 373 critics gave it a thumbs up. The consensus on the site reads, “Assembling a ragtag band of underdogs with Florence Pugh as their magnetic standout, Thunderbolts* refreshingly goes back to the tried-and-true blueprint of the MCU’s best adventures.” Over on Metacritic, the film scored 68 out of 100, which is considered generally favorable.

Audience reactions were also strong. CinemaScore gave it an A–, and PostTrak reported that viewers gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars. About 74% of people surveyed said they’d definitely recommend it.

Even though the movie didn’t bring in the numbers Marvel was probably hoping for, it still connected with fans and critics alike. If the Greek ad is right, we’ll be seeing Thunderbolts* on Disney+ starting August 27. Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed that date yet, but the timing lines up, and the wait might finally be over.
