Melissa Barrera has spoken about her fallout with the Scream franchise and raised doubts about the reported box office performance of Scream 7.

In a recent interview, Barrera reflected on her exit from the horror series and the impact it had on her career. She was removed from the project after public posts she made in late 2023 about the Israel–Gaza conflict.

Around the same time, she also lost representation from her talent agency. The production company behind Scream, Spyglass, said at the time that it had “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form,” including what it described as false references to genocide and other serious accusations.

Barrera rejected those claims and defended her statements, saying she was speaking out against harm and supporting human rights. She has maintained that criticism of a government is not the same as hate speech.

During the interview, Barrera also addressed Scream 7 itself and its commercial performance. While discussing her experience with the franchise, she questioned the accuracy of the film’s reported earnings. She said, “I think they lied about the numbers. I don’t think it made that much money.”

Her comments come after public reports placed the film’s global box office total at around $214 million. According to widely shared industry figures, the movie had a strong opening and continued to earn steadily, though it faced large drops in later weeks. These numbers have been tracked and reported by entertainment trade outlets.

Barrera also spoke about how she felt replaced and how the franchise moved forward without her and other key contributors. She suggested that nostalgia played a big role in the studio’s approach after her exit.

Beyond the film itself, Barrera described a difficult period in her life after being dropped from the project, saying work offers slowed down and she felt uncertain about her future in Hollywood. Over time, she returned to acting through theatre work and said she has found more stability on stage.

Her recent success in Broadway productions marks a new phase in her career, but she still reflects on the controversy surrounding her departure from Scream and how it affected her standing in the industry.

This situation shows how quickly public disputes in Hollywood can turn into long-term career consequences. Barrera’s comments about box office numbers will likely spark debate, especially since official figures are already widely reported.
