Melissa Barrera Says She’d Return to ‘Scream,’ but Only Under One Major Condition

Franchise comebacks are usually simple in Hollywood: a call gets made, a deal gets signed, and a beloved character returns to close out unfinished business. For one ‘Scream’ actress, though, the path back to the franchise that made her a horror icon isn’t nearly that straightforward.

Melissa Barrera has spent the past few years navigating a complicated relationship with the series that helped define a major chapter of her career. Her exit from the franchise back in 2023 was anything but quiet, and the fallout has continued to shape conversations around any potential future involvement.

Speaking during a recent interview with JustWatch, Barrera made clear that a return to ‘Scream‘ remains possible in theory, but only if the franchise moves away from its current rights holder, Spyglass Media Group. Asked directly whether she would ever come back, she indicated it would not happen under the company that currently controls the rights.

She emphasized that her issue isn’t with the films themselves, saying she still loves the franchise and had a genuinely positive experience making both ‘Scream’ and ‘Scream VI’ as Samantha Carpenter. Her frustration, she explained, stems specifically from how Spyglass’s leadership handled her departure and the label she felt was unfairly attached to her afterward, one she said the company never walked back even after she felt she had been vindicated.

Barrera’s comments trace back to her removal from ‘Scream 7’ in November 2023, after she shared social media posts criticizing Israel’s actions amid the war in Gaza. At the time, Spyglass issued a public statement saying the company held zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or language that crosses into hate speech.

Barrera went further in her recent comments, suggesting that even a formal apology from the company wouldn’t be enough to bring her back into the fold. She added that she isn’t holding her breath for that kind of change from Spyglass’s current leadership, but left the door open to a return if the rights were ever transferred to people she felt would better honor the legacy of the franchise’s original director, the late Wes Craven.

Her exit set off a chain of departures at the time. Co-star Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon both left the project shortly after Barrera’s removal, with the eventual film moving forward under a different cast and creative direction entirely.

Despite those upheavals, the franchise has continued performing well commercially without her. The most recent installment reportedly earned around $214 million worldwide, even as some outlets noted it received franchise-low reviews compared to its predecessors.

An eighth film is reportedly already in development at Spyglass and Paramount, though no release date, casting details, or director have been confirmed. Reports indicate the screenplay has been handed to a new writing team, while speculation continues around who might eventually direct.

Barrera’s remarks don’t guarantee anything close to an actual comeback, and her condition would require a significant shift in who controls the franchise’s rights, something with no indication of happening anytime soon. Still, her willingness to leave the door open at all suggests the story isn’t entirely closed, even if the timeline for any resolution remains completely unclear.

For now, ‘Scream’ fans are left with a familiar horror movie setup of their own: a beloved character technically still alive, waiting in the wings for circumstances to finally align.
