Michael Douglas (82) Reveals Who His Unexpected Rival Was While He Was Winning Over Catherine Zeta-Jones (57)
Hollywood love stories rarely stay tidy once a memoir comes along, and Michael Douglas has never been shy about the messy parts of his life. His new book, ‘One Helluva Ride’, arrived on Oct. 6 from Grand Central Publishing and covers everything from his childhood as Kirk Douglas’s son to his rise in Hollywood. It also gives fans a closer look at how he won over Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The relationship has long been one of the industry’s most durable. Douglas has said he first fell for Zeta-Jones on a movie screen, after seeing her in ‘The Mask of Zorro’, before they ever met. They were formally introduced in 1998 at the Deauville American Film Festival in France, with Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith playing matchmaker.
What he didn’t expect, according to the book, was competition. Douglas writes that he had a surprising rival in basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who lived near Zeta-Jones in Pacific Palisades and reportedly kept finding reasons to drop by her home. Douglas jokes that Bryant lost his dog an awful lot, though he admits he isn’t sure how many times it actually happened.
At the time, the couple’s relationship was a long-distance one, with Douglas living in New York and Zeta-Jones based in Los Angeles. She also traveled often for work, which meant she wasn’t always home. Bryant, then in his early 20s, had not yet met his future wife, Vanessa.
Zeta-Jones has confirmed her side of the story in a way. After Bryant died in January 2020, she posted an Instagram tribute recalling that he had been her next-door neighbor in Pacific Palisades roughly 24 years earlier. She wrote that they first met when his dog wandered into her garden, and that she could watch him practice on his private basketball court from her home.
Her account lines up neatly with Douglas’s version, which adds a note of tenderness to what is otherwise a funny anecdote. Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were among those killed in the helicopter crash, a tragedy that shaped how many people now read the story.
Douglas has never pretended his pursuit was subtle. In a 2018 appearance on ‘On Air With Ryan Seacrest’, he recalled that on their first night he learned they shared a birthday and that she loved golf. He said he told her he would be the father of her children, a line he later called a little presumptuous.
The memoir also explains why he moved fast. Reports citing the LA Times say Douglas acknowledged his playboy reputation and ended relationships with five women around the time his romance with Zeta-Jones became public. He described himself as a new man after they began building a family.
The timeline backs that up. Douglas proposed on New Year’s Eve in 1999, and the couple married on Nov. 18, 2000, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Their son, Dylan, was born in August 2000, and their daughter, Carys, followed in April 2003.
‘One Helluva Ride’ has a story of its own. TheWrap reported in an exclusive that the book almost missed its publication date after a lengthy legal review in the U.S. and England. Last-minute edits were needed after private conversations with well-known figures appeared in the text, and 80 previously unseen photos were added late.
The book was approved just minutes before the deadline. Douglas received a multimillion-dollar advance, and foreign rights were sold in 25 countries. Beyond the love story, he writes about films like ‘The China Syndrome’, ‘Fatal Attraction’, ‘Falling Down’ and ‘Behind the Candelabra’, as well as his first marriage, infidelity, rehab, his son’s addiction and his fight with stage IV cancer.
The anecdote works because it is so human. Douglas, a veteran leading man, was competing from across the country with a young superstar who lived practically next door. Instead of treating it as a threat, he tells it with a wink.
It also fits the couple’s long history of laughing through hard moments. They briefly separated in 2013 and reunited in 2014, and they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in November 2025. Douglas has said he never gave up hope they would reconcile, and the pair now appear to be in a good place.
For readers, the Bryant story is a rare glimpse of a time when everyone involved was young, ambitious and still figuring out their lives. It is funny, a little poignant and very Hollywood.
