Sony has released its financial results for the first quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, and one of the biggest success stories came from an unexpected place. According to the company’s latest earnings report, Michael Jackson’s music helped give Sony Music a major boost during the quarter, even as Sony Pictures faced a much slower period at the box office.

Sony Music reported sales of 557.9 billion yen, or about $3.5 billion, for the three months ending in June. That marks a 22 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The company said Michael Jackson’s classic albums Thriller and Bad were among its 10 best-selling recorded music projects during the quarter.

The strong performance came at the same time Lionsgate released Michael, the new biographical film about the late singer. While Sony did not directly credit the movie for the increase, the timing suggests the film helped bring renewed attention to Jackson’s music. Fans old and new have been revisiting his catalog, leading to higher music sales during the quarter.

Michael Jackson’s ‘Michael’ Just Became One of the Biggest Movies in Box Office History

Jackson remains one of the biggest artists in music history, and albums like Thriller and Bad continue to sell decades after their original release. The renewed interest surrounding Michael appears to have added another chapter to that long-lasting success.

While Sony Music enjoyed a strong quarter, Sony Pictures had a much quieter few months. According to Sony’s earnings report, the studio released only one major theatrical film in North America during the quarter, Nate Bargatze’s comedy The Breadwinner. As a result, the film division brought in less revenue than it did during the same period last year.

Sony Pictures reported revenue of $1.98 billion, a 13 percent decline compared to the previous year. Even with lower revenue, the studio’s operating income increased by 21 percent to $156 million, showing that the business remained profitable despite having fewer releases in theaters.

The company’s theatrical revenue reached $30 million during the quarter. That was around $100 million lower than the same period in 2025, when Sony released 28 Years Later and Karate Kid: Legends. Those films gave the studio a much stronger theatrical lineup than it had this year.

Sony’s television business also saw a decline. Television revenue dropped from $841 million during the same quarter last year to $571 million this year. According to the earnings report, the decrease happened because the company delivered fewer television series during the period, even though the final season of The Boys premiered on Prime Video.

Overall, Sony’s latest earnings show two very different stories within the company. Its music division had a strong quarter, driven in part by renewed interest in Michael Jackson’s legendary catalog. At the same time, its film and television businesses experienced slower activity because of a lighter release schedule.

The results highlight how valuable Sony’s music library continues to be. Even years after his passing, Michael Jackson’s music remains a major commercial force, and the release of Michael appears to have encouraged many listeners to return to some of his most famous albums.

Do you think the release of Michael helped boost interest in Michael Jackson's music?
