Director Michael Mann is considering using artificial intelligence in his highly anticipated sequel, Heat 2.

In a recent interview, Mann, 81, said AI could help show characters at different ages, making the story’s jumps through time feel more natural.

Aging and de-aging may be very important, Mann explained. “The story stretches across different time periods, and I want the transitions to feel authentic. If AI can help achieve that without losing the emotional truth of the performances, it’s worth exploring.”

Fans of the original 1995 crime film immediately took notice. Heat 2 will explore both events leading up to the first movie and what happens afterward. The film stars characters who need to appear younger or older at different points, which can be difficult to achieve with traditional makeup or visual effects.

Mann emphasized that AI will only be used to serve the story, not as a gimmick. “I’ve always been driven by realism and emotion. If AI helps enhance that — while respecting the integrity of the actors — then it’s another brush in the artist’s toolkit,” he said.

The sequel is based on Mann’s 2022 novel co-written with Meg Gardiner and continues the intense world of cops and criminals that made the first Heat a classic. While production details are still limited, Mann’s comments suggest that AI may play an important role in bringing his vision to life.

Using AI for time jumps and character transformations could signal a new direction in filmmaking, blending technology with traditional storytelling techniques.
