Michael Waldron Bringing Marvel’s ‘Nova’ to the Big Screen As a Feature Film, Not a TV Series
Michael Waldron is reportedly bringing Marvel’s Nova to the big screen, with the project now being developed as a feature film rather than a Disney+ series.
According to Deadline, Waldron, who has worked with Marvel Studios before on projects like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Loki, is currently writing the script for a Nova movie. Sources told Deadline that the project is still in the early stages of development, but Waldron is also interested in directing if the film moves forward.
Marvel Studios has not officially announced the movie, and the studio has not commented on the report. However, the news marks a major change for Nova’s long-awaited introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For years, Marvel had been exploring Nova as a potential television project. Writer Sabir Pirzada was previously attached to develop a Nova series for Disney+, but Deadline reports that those plans were eventually shelved in 2025. The character has now been reworked as a possible theatrical release.
Rumors about Waldron’s involvement began circulating after his Writers Guild of America credits reportedly revealed Nova as one of his upcoming projects. That discovery led to speculation that Marvel had restarted development on the character, with Waldron now taking over the creative direction.
Nova has been a major character in Marvel Comics for decades. The hero, also known as Richard Rider, first appeared in 1976’s Super Adventures #1. He becomes part of the Nova Corps, an intergalactic police force that protects the universe. After gaining the Nova Force, the character receives abilities including super strength, flight, increased durability and energy-based powers.
While Nova has not played a major role in the current MCU timeline, the character has strong connections to Marvel’s cosmic stories. The Nova Corps appeared in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, although the group was heavily damaged during Thanos’ attack before the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Introducing Nova could allow Marvel to explore more of the universe beyond Earth and bring a new cosmic hero into the franchise.
The character also has connections to storylines involving the Skrulls, who have already played important roles in Marvel projects including Captain Marvel and the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. A Nova movie could potentially connect to the larger cosmic side of the MCU while introducing audiences to another powerful hero.
Are you excited for a Marvel Studios ‘Nova’ movie?
Waldron is already a familiar name within Marvel Studios. He wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and served as the creator and showrunner of Loki, one of Marvel’s most successful Disney+ series. His work on Loki helped expand the MCU’s multiverse storyline, which became a major part of recent Marvel projects.
Outside of superhero movies, Waldron has also worked on other genres. He created the wrestling drama Heels for Starz, which later found a larger audience after arriving on Netflix. He is also behind Hulu’s comedy series Chad Powers, starring Glen Powell, which recently completed its second season.
With Marvel continuing to expand its lineup of theatrical projects, Nova could become another important addition to the MCU’s future. However, fans will likely have to wait before the studio confirms whether Waldron’s version of the character officially moves forward and when the cosmic hero could finally make his big-screen debut.
