Michelle Obama, 62, Stuns Fans by Getting 10 Piercings in a Single Sitting

Michelle Obama is adding a bold new touch to her style. On the February 11 episode of her IMO podcast with her brother Craig Robinson, the former first lady revealed she recently got 10 ear piercings, all in one sitting.

The 62-year-old shared the news while chatting with Robinson about things they’ve learned about each other since starting the podcast. Robinson teased her, saying, “What I’ve learned is that you tried to get your ears pierced and thought I didn’t notice. And I see you got all these new piercings in your ear.”

Michelle laughed and replied, “I don’t think you noticed.” She explained that she had been thinking about getting more piercings for a while. “I have always thought about getting some extra piercings in my ear and just never got around to it,” she said. She mentioned that she had a second piercing from before she had kids but had stopped wearing earrings there over time.

“But nowadays, the young people in my life are doing more piercings. There’s just more beautiful adornment,” Michelle added. “You see more of a cluster, a constellation, with twinkles.”

When Robinson asked how many piercings she had, Michelle said she initially planned on getting just a few, but she got carried away during the appointment. “So in one sitting, I’ve got 10 piercings,” she said. Robinson joked, “Ouch,” to which Michelle reassured him, “[It] wasn’t bad at all.”

She also shared a funny moment about her husband noticing the change. “Barack, [it] took him a couple of days,” she said. “He was like, ‘You haven’t had your hair up, you’ve had your hair down.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know. I like sleep with you every night, dude, you know?’” Robinson added, “Don’t tell him that I noticed before him,” and Michelle admitted, “I think I did.”

Michelle has been embracing more freedom in her personal style in recent years. In November, she told PEOPLE about her new coffee-table book, The Look, and discussed how she now feels free to wear what she wants, including her favorite hairstyles like braids. “Braids allow me to get them done, and then that’s one less thing that I have to think about. When I’m out of the public eye, I am swimming, I am playing tennis, and braids represent that kind of freedom for me,” she said.

She reflected on the challenges of her earlier public life, noting that she avoided certain styles while her husband was president. “I wasn’t sure whether the country was ready for it,” she said, referring to wearing braids. “The Crown Act [which protects employees and students from race-based hair discrimination] hadn’t been passed yet, and just like fashion, I didn’t want my hair to become a distraction.”

Michelle Obama’s new piercings are part of a broader shift in how she expresses herself. She is clearly enjoying the freedom to experiment with style while balancing her public image and personal preferences.
