‘Mickey 17’ Crosses $100 Million Globally but Falls Short of Breaking Even
Director Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 has reached an important box office milestone, but it still hasn’t earned back its budget. The sci-fi film had a weak opening and failed to attract a large audience, still, it has finally crossed $100M at the global box office.
The movie has struggled at the box office. In its first weekend, it made $19 million in the U.S. and Canada. So far, it has earned $62 million worldwide. But with a $118 million budget and $80 million spent on marketing, it needs $340–400 million to break even. Warner Bros. expects to lose around $100 million.
In South Korea, Mickey 17 had a strong start, making $1.7 million on its opening day. It went on to earn $9 million in its first weekend. But in the U.S., ticket sales dropped fast. The film is expected to make just $7.5 million in its second weekend.
Critics gave Mickey 17 mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 77% score. Some praised its unique sci-fi story and humor. Others said it was too chaotic. Audience reactions were mixed, with a CinemaScore of “B.”
After just 17 days in cinemas, Warner Bros. released Mickey 17 on digital platforms. This usually happens only when a movie does poorly at the box office.
So far, the film has made around $40 million in the U.S. and $70 million overseas, bringing its total earnings to $110 million. Since the film cost about $120 million to make, it needed at least $250 million to break even. That goal is now impossible to reach.
