Miley Cyrus, the pop star known for hits like “Party in the USA” and her time on Hannah Montana, isn’t actually named Miley. Her real name is Destiny Hope, her mother Tish revealed during a recent episode of the Raven and Miranda Podcast.

“Billy Rae (Miley’s father) came up with that. She always smiled when she was little, so we would call her smiley Miley, and it just stuck,” Tish said. Miley legally changed her name to Miley in 2008, embracing the nickname that had followed her since childhood.

Tish also shared the stories behind the names of Miley’s sisters. Noah Cyrus got her unique name after Tish spotted it somewhere years ago and loved it. “I remember years and years and years ago, I don’t even know who she was, but I remember seeing a girl called Noah Kelly, and I was like I have never heard that name for a girl, and I loved it!”

Brandi Cyrus, the third sister, was named after a favorite music video from the 1980s. “Remember the song Love in an Elevator, (in that video) there was a… hot video vixen… called Brandi Brandt – and I loved it,” Tish said.

Fans were surprised to learn Miley’s original name. One commented, “Today years old when I found out Miley is her stage name.” Another wrote, “Never believed Miley’s real name was Destiny until now.” Many praised Tish for her creative choices, saying the names were thoughtful and unique.

It’s always interesting to discover the stories behind celebrity names, and Miley’s transformation from Destiny Hope to Miley Cyrus shows how a childhood nickname can become a worldwide identity.
