‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ is finally heading to digital platforms on August 19. This news comes almost three months after the movie first hit theaters.

The film is the eighth chapter in the famous action series, and marks Tom Cruise’s last time playing Ethan Hunt. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the movie was written by McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen.

In this latest adventure, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team are racing to stop a rogue AI known as the Entity, which threatens all of humanity. The film also stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett.

The movie premiered in Tokyo on May 5, 2025, and was later shown at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14 before its wide theatrical release on May 23.

According to Paramount Pictures, the film was originally planned for much earlier releases but kept getting delayed. It was pushed back several times because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

Those delays caused the production costs to rise significantly. Reports say the budget climbed to at least $400 million, making it one of the most expensive movies ever made.

In terms of box office numbers, as of July 20, 2025, the movie has earned $196 million in the U.S. and Canada, plus $393 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $589 million.

Reviews for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning were mostly positive, but not as strong as past movies in the series.

Many critics liked the action scenes but felt the first part of the movie was too slow because of too much talking and explaining.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 80% of critics gave the movie a good review. The site’s summary says the movie is big in action and style, and a fitting end for Ethan Hunt’s story.

Metacritic gave the film a score of 67 out of 100, showing that most reviews were generally good. People who saw the movie in theaters gave it an A– grade according to CinemaScore, and 89% of people polled by PostTrak said they enjoyed it.
