‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’: Positive First Reactions Praise Epic Action and Emotional Farewell
The first reactions to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning are in, and they paint a picture of a thrilling and emotional conclusion to the long-running franchise. While some critics point out flaws, many praise the film’s action sequences and Tom Cruise’s performance.
Tom Cruise announced in January 2019 that the seventh and eighth Mission: Impossible movies would be filmed back-to-back, with Christopher McQuarrie writing and directing both. Plans for the eighth movie changed in February 2021.
Filming started in March 2022 in the UK, with scenes also shot in Malta, South Africa, and Norway. Production stopped in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, started again in March 2024, and ended in November 2024.
Originally called Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, the title changed to The Final Reckoning in November 2024. The movie’s budget is around $400 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made.
Still, considering that some have already seen it early, we have plenty of reactions to go on.
Some viewers felt the film leaned heavily on nostalgia, with archival montages and editing choices that were sometimes confusing.
However, they also noted that the movie remains fun and features standout performances, particularly from Tramell Tillman and Simon Pegg.
Other fans are calling The Final Reckoning not just the best in the Mission: Impossible series but possibly one of the greatest action films ever made. They highlight its emotional depth, gritty tone, and mind-blowing stunts, with Tom Cruise delivering a career-best performance.
The world premiere was in Tokyo on May 5, 2025, and it will be shown at Cannes on May 14. The movie will be released in the United States on May 23, 2025.
