Few DC comics have earned the kind of devotion that Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ ‘Mister Miracle’ did. The 2017 series won major Eisner Awards and left a mark on readers who found its blend of cosmic war and domestic heartache deeply personal. For fans, the question has long been when the story would make it to the screen.

The adaptation was greenlit in June 2025 by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios as an adult animated series. It became the second adult animated project from the studio after ‘Creature Commandos,’ and King was named showrunner and executive producer. Since then, details have been scarce, with no network or cast announced.

Now DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has given a major update. In an interview with Collider ahead of ‘Clayface,’ Safran confirmed that ‘Mister Miracle‘ is targeting a 2028 release, saying the team has “always thought of it as ’28.” No exact premiere date has been announced, but the timeline is the clearest yet.

Safran revealed that he has already seen animatics for the whole season. The series runs 8 episodes of about 30 minutes each, which suggests the production is well into development. He also noted that the show is part of the DCU.

There is a hint that the story could continue. Safran suggested there is no reason the series could not become an ongoing show with multiple seasons, though no additional seasons have been announced. For now, the focus is on delivering the first 8 episodes.

The casting was revealed in a separate interview with IGN, where Safran appeared to casually drop the news. Josh Hutcherson, known for ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ will voice Scott Free, the master escape artist. Mackenzie Davis, whose credits include ‘Station Eleven,’ ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate,’ will voice his formidable wife, Big Barda.

Neither actor has been confirmed for a live-action appearance, though some outlets suggest they could reprise the roles if DC Studios decides to bring the characters into a live-action project. The casting also raises a big question about who will voice Darkseid. That role has not been revealed.

King wrote every episode of the series himself, and Safran said the experience he gained from co-creating the live-action ‘Lanterns’ for HBO helped him adapt his own book. King co-created ‘Lanterns’ with Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy. Safran praised the scripts in glowing terms and said he loves the story.

He also shared an anecdote about King and the original book. According to Safran, King has said that at nearly every convention, a few people come up to tell him the comic saved their lives. The series aims to tell a story about how people survive in today’s world, knowing they may never truly find the answers to life’s big questions.

The official logline introduces Scott Free as a worldwide celebrity known as Mister Miracle and the greatest escape artist who ever lived. Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and Big Barda have built on Earth. A war is raging between their home worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis, and Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, appears to have captured the Anti-Life Equation.

The logline describes the journey as harrowing, hilarious and heart wrenching, following the son of God raised by the devil. It is a mix of cosmic stakes and intimate emotion that fits the tone of the original comic. Mister Miracle himself was created by Jack Kirby in the early 1970s, and this is the first time he will headline his own show.

‘Mister Miracle’ is one of several animated projects in an advanced state of development at DC Studios. Others include ‘Creature Commandos’ season 2, ‘My Adventures with Green Lantern,’ ‘Starfire’ and ‘DC Superpowers.’ That slate shows the studio’s commitment to animation as a core part of its universe.

For fans, the confirmation that the show is part of the DCU is important. It means the New Gods could eventually cross over with other characters, and Darkseid’s casting will be a major moment. The 2028 window also gives the team time to polish a story that fans hold dear.

Despite the progress, there is still plenty to learn. No network or streaming home has been officially confirmed, and the exact release date remains under wraps. The studio has also not announced who will voice Darkseid or any of the other New Gods.

Still, the combination of King’s writing, a strong lead pairing and a clear timeline is encouraging. With animatics already complete, the project looks to be on solid ground. The wait is long, but the signs are good.
