Fans of Moon Knight are still waiting to see when Oscar Isaac will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now the show’s creator has shared new details about why the character has been absent for so long.

In an interview with ComicBook while promoting Mortal Kombat II, series creator Jeremy Slater explained that Isaac’s future as Moon Knight depends heavily on finding the right story.

According to Slater, Marvel Studios cannot simply bring the actor back whenever they want because Isaac has a strong creative role in deciding what happens next with the character. Slater said, “The contract Oscar Isaac signed was very much like, we will do more stories when we find stories that he is creatively excited to tell.”

He also explained that Isaac wants to make sure any future project feels worthwhile before returning to the role. Slater added, “He’s really creatively involved in the future of that character.”

The Disney+ series first premiered in 2022 and quickly became one of Marvel’s most talked-about shows. Critics and audiences praised Isaac’s performance as Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley, three very different personalities living inside the same person. The show also earned several Emmy nominations and became one of the most successful Marvel streaming releases during that period.

Even with the show’s success, Marvel has still not officially announced a second season or another appearance for Moon Knight in the MCU.

The ending of the first season left many questions unanswered, especially after Jake Lockley was revealed as a dangerous third identity still connected to the Egyptian god Khonshu. Because of that cliffhanger, many fans believe a second season could still happen in the future.

At the same time, there have been rumors that Marvel may instead bring Moon Knight into a larger supernatural team project. Reports surrounding the troubled Blade reboot have led to speculation that Marvel could shift focus toward a Midnight Sons movie. In Marvel Comics, the Midnight Sons usually include characters like Blade, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, Werewolf by Night, and Elsa Bloodstone.

Several of those characters already exist inside the MCU, and Isaac himself has reportedly shown interest in the idea before.

Still, Slater admitted he personally has no inside information about Marvel’s current plans. He revealed that he has not spoken with Marvel Studios in years and does not know whether the next step for Moon Knight will be another season, a movie, or a team-up project.

Slater said, “I don’t know. Is there gonna be a Moon Knight movie? Is there gonna be a Midnight Sons movie? Is there gonna be a season 2? I’m as much in the dark as everyone else.”

Even so, he remains hopeful fans will eventually see Isaac return. Slater explained that the actor enjoyed making the show and appreciated the positive response from viewers. He said, “I would be surprised if we didn’t see him again, but that’s just me speculating as a fan.”

Right now, Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed any new Moon Knight project. Until then, fans may have to wait a little longer to see Marc Spector return to the MCU.
