Morgan Freeman Reveals the One Movie He Holds Closest to His Heart

Morgan Freeman has appeared in many unforgettable films during his career, but there’s one movie that stands out as his most meaningful, Glory. The actor said it remains the project he holds dearest because of what it represents and how it touched people who watched it.

Speaking to CNN, Freeman explained that Glory means more to him than any other role he’s ever played. “Because this was history, and it was unknown history,” he said.

“And a lot of people saw that movie, and they told me they wept because they were so ignorant of those facts. So that’s a good thing for me.” He added.

Released in 1989 and directed by Edward Zwick, Glory tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first African American units to fight for the Union Army during the American Civil War. The film stars Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, with Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman portraying members of the regiment.

While the film wasn’t a major box office hit, earning just above its $18 million budget, it became a critical success. Glory went on to win three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Denzel Washington, and earned strong praise for its cinematography and storytelling.

Critics highlighted its emotional impact and historical importance, though some questioned its decision to center much of the story on a white officer’s perspective.

Reviewers from publications like The New York Times and The Chicago Sun-Times praised the film for its moving portrayal of courage and sacrifice, while others noted flaws in casting and focus.

Despite mixed opinions on certain elements, the movie remains highly regarded today, holding a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and often being cited as one of the most powerful war dramas ever made.
