This upcoming movie is a sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat film. It will bring back many of the characters from that movie. Actors like Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero and Bi-Han, and Max Huang as Kung Lao are all returning.

There are also new faces joining the cast this time. Karl Urban will play Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph will be Kitana, and Tati Gabrielle will play Jade. Martyn Ford is taking on the role of Shao Kahn, Damon Herriman will appear as Quan Chi, Desmond Chiam will play King Jerrod, and Ana Thu Nguyen will play Queen Sindel.

Mortal Kombat 2 is directed by Simon McQuoid, who also directed the first film. Jeremy Slater wrote the script. The movie is based on the popular video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Warner Bros. Pictures will release the film in theaters.

The idea for the sequel came after the first movie was released in April 2021. According to reports from Warner Bros., talks about expanding the Mortal Kombat franchise started soon after. Producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director McQuoid discussed ideas for not only a sequel but also possible spin-offs focused on certain characters like Johnny Cage and Sub-Zero.

By 2022, the studio officially gave the green light for Mortal Kombat 2, with Slater chosen to write the movie and McQuoid returning as director. Filming began in Australia in June 2023, but was stopped in July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Production picked back up in November and was finished by January 2024.

Joe Taslim, who plays Sub-Zero, earlier shared that he has a contract for four more Mortal Kombat movies if the studio decides to keep going with the series.

Director McQuoid had also said in earlier interviews that he’d be open to returning if the story felt strong enough. He explained that Johnny Cage wasn’t included in the first film because the character’s big personality could throw the film off balance. But he always planned to bring him in for a sequel.

McQuoid and writer Russo also talked about wanting more female characters in the new films. Russo once described the Mortal Kombat reboot as a trilogy. He said the first movie would cover events before the tournament, the second movie would focus on the tournament itself, and the third would show what happens after the tournament.

Now, fans don’t have to wait much longer. The trailer is just hours away, and the movie itself will hit theaters this October.
