Anticipation for the follow-up to 2025’s blockbuster video game adaptation has been building steadily, with fans scouring every scrap of set news they can find. The original film became a genuine cultural phenomenon, and that hunger for details hasn’t slowed down as production on the sequel rolls forward.
‘A Minecraft Movie Squared‘ has kept a tight lid on plot specifics since cameras started rolling, with the cast and crew mostly sticking to vague teases about new biomes and deeper dives into the Overworld. That secrecy has only made fans hungrier for any glimpse behind the curtain, official or otherwise.
That hunger got fed this week when Instagram user @emabelicova shared a clip on social media showing what appears to be a mysterious black structure standing alone in a stretch of red-rock desert. The video shows a tall, dark rectangular frame planted in the sand alongside scattered production equipment and green cover panels.
The Instagram clip itself carries an on-screen caption reading, “Accidentally getting on the set of Minecraft 2 was NOT on my 2026 bingo card,” suggesting the person filming stumbled onto the location unexpectedly rather than being invited for a set visit. The structure’s blocky, door-like shape has fans immediately drawing comparisons to a Nether portal frame, one of the most recognizable pieces of iconography from the game.
Whether this particular desert stretch is actually tied to the film remains unconfirmed, and the rugged, sunbaked terrain doesn’t obviously match the New Zealand landscapes previously reported as the sequel’s primary filming base. Still, that hasn’t stopped speculation from spreading quickly, with commenters online already debating what the structure might represent in the story.
‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ is the confirmed sequel to ‘A Minecraft Movie’, which became one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations ever after pulling in nearly $1 billion worldwide against a $150 million budget. Jared Hess is back in the director’s chair, co-writing the screenplay this time with Chris Galletta.
Much of the original cast is returning for the follow-up. Jason Momoa reprises his role as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Jack Black is back as Steve, Danielle Brooks returns as Dawn, and Jennifer Coolidge is once again playing Vice Principal Marlene. Matt Berry, who voiced Nitwit in the first film, is also returning, though in a different and still-undisclosed role this time around.
The biggest new addition to the cast is Kirsten Dunst, who joined the production earlier this year in the role of Alex, the character who appeared only briefly in the first movie’s post-credits scene. Alex is one of the two default player avatars from the original ‘Minecraft’ game, alongside Steve, so her expanded presence signals the sequel may lean further into the source material’s roots.
Production on ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ got underway in New Zealand back in the spring, retracing some of the same steps as the original shoot. The sequel’s title itself went through a bit of a journey before landing on its final form, having briefly been referred to as simply ‘A Minecraft Sequel’ before Warner Bros. settled on the punnier ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ during a Minecraft Live event.
No official plot details have been released for the sequel, leaving fans to fill in the gaps with theories drawn from stray photos like this desert sighting. Given how much attention the first film’s marketing generated from leaked and semi-leaked images, it wouldn’t be surprising if more of these accidental sightings surface as production continues.
For now, the desert structure remains an open question mark, an intriguing hint dropped into the middle of nowhere with no confirmation attached. ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
