Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner Keeps Expanding, Now Set to Join DC’s Upcoming Show

Nathan Fillion has quietly become one of the most reliable connective threads running through James Gunn’s rebuilt DC Universe, popping up as Green Lantern Guy Gardner across an ever-growing list of projects since the character’s live-action debut. What started as a single supporting role in this summer’s ‘Superman’ has since snowballed into something closer to a franchise fixture.

That expansion officially began with Fillion’s introduction as Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s ‘Superman,’ released this past July, marking his live-action live-action debut as the loud, brash Green Lantern after years of voicing a different Corps member, Hal Jordan, in various animated DC projects. From there, Fillion’s role only continued growing, with the actor confirmed to reprise Guy Gardner in HBO’s upcoming ‘Lanterns’ series alongside Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart.

Now that momentum is extending even further into DC’s animation slate. According to showrunner Tom King, Fillion’s Guy Gardner will also appear in DC Studios’ upcoming adult animated series ‘Mister Miracle,’ marking yet another appearance for the character across the studio’s rapidly expanding interconnected universe.

‘Mister Miracle’ is based on Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ critically acclaimed 12-issue comic book series, with King serving as both showrunner and executive producer on the animated adaptation. The series follows Scott Free, the world-famous escape artist known as Mister Miracle, as he attempts to pull off his most dangerous trick yet, escaping death itself, after his adoptive father Darkseid appears to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon capable of granting him total dominance over the universe.

Guy Gardner’s expanding footprint fits neatly into how DC Studios has approached its interconnected universe under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran, weaving supporting characters across film, television, and animation rather than confining them to a single format. Fillion’s version of the character has become a particularly notable example of that strategy in action, given how quickly his role has grown since his first on-screen appearance.

That growth also carries a bit of franchise history behind it. Guy Gardner was originally set to headline the ‘Lanterns’ series entirely during its earliest development stages back when it was first announced at HBO Max’s 2019 WarnerMedia Day presentation, with actor Finn Wittrock previously cast in the role before the project underwent a significant redevelopment. Fillion’s eventual casting as Guy Gardner for the current DCU represents something of a full-circle moment for the character’s connection to the show, even though the series ultimately shifted its primary focus to Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

‘Mister Miracle’ itself was officially greenlit by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios during the Annecy Animation Festival, positioned as an adult-oriented entry in the studio’s growing animation lineup. A release window and network for the series have not yet been announced, though production is reportedly already underway.

With Fillion’s Guy Gardner now confirmed across ‘Superman,’ ‘Lanterns,’ and ‘Mister Miracle,’ the character has quickly become one of the most utilized supporting figures in DC Studios’ current slate, reinforcing just how central interconnectivity has become to Gunn and Safran’s overall vision for the franchise.
