Spin-offs have a rough track record in television, often struggling to justify their existence beyond capitalizing on a popular side character from a hit show. The trick has always been finding a way to stand on its own while still honoring what made the original story work in the first place.

That challenge landed squarely on Prime Video’s new ‘Reacher’ spin-off, which had a genuinely fan-favorite character to build around going in. Frances Neagley spent multiple seasons stealing scenes as Jack Reacher’s sharp, no-nonsense former Army colleague, and anticipation had been steadily building ever since her solo series was first announced.

Now that ‘Neagley‘ first reviews arrived, early reactions suggest the spin-off has largely delivered on that promise. Maria Sten reprises her role as the title character, leading an original eight-episode mystery-thriller that doesn’t adapt any specific Lee Child novel, giving the show room to build its own standalone story within the established ‘Reacher’ universe.

The series follows Neagley, a former U.S. Army Master Sergeant who served in the elite 110th Special Investigations Unit alongside Reacher before building a career as a private investigator and corporate security consultant in Chicago. Collider’s review described the series as a “‘Reacher’-lite” spin-off that’s “officially worth your time,” praising the strong ensemble cast while noting that the show doesn’t always do enough to carve out a distinct identity separate from its parent series. Still, the review credited ‘Neagley’ with delivering a genuinely compelling, intimate mystery that should satisfy longtime fans of the franchise.
