Neon Genesis Evangelion is set to return with an all-new anime series, and fans of the cult classic have a major reason to be excited. According to Verity Townsend at Verity, the series will be written and composed by Yoko Taro, the acclaimed director behind Nier: Automata. The new project is a collaboration between Hideaki Anno’s Studio Khara and CloverWorks.

The announcement came during the Evangelion:30+ event in Yokohama, Japan, celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary. The three-day festival included exhibitions, talks, a kabuki adaptation, and even a brand-new 15-minute short featuring Asuka Langley. Townsend reports that this new anime is being promoted as a completely original series, separate from previous adaptations and films.

Joining Taro on the project are directors Kazuya Tsurumaki, who led the Rebuild of Evangelion films, and Toko Yatabe, a key animator on the Rebuild series. Composer Keiichi Okabe, known for his work on Nier, Drakengard, and Tekken, will handle the music. Yoko Taro shared his excitement on X, writing “It’s been announced! I’ll do my best!” in response to Studio Khara’s post.

The original Neon Genesis Evangelion series aired in 1995-1996 and became a worldwide phenomenon. It was followed by the 1997 movie The End of Evangelion, which offered an alternate ending. From 2007 to 2021, the Rebuild of Evangelion films retold the series’ story, culminating in Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, which earned over 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office.

Townsend notes that the original studio behind Evangelion, Gainax, was liquidated last December following scandals and legal issues with Studio Khara. Anno described the closure as a “truly disappointing end.”

With a new creative team and the backing of Studio Khara, this next chapter promises to bring fresh perspectives while honoring the legacy of the original series. Fans are eager to see how Taro’s signature style will influence the complex world of Evangelion.
