Netflix Cancels Latest Thriller Series After Just One Season
Netflix has decided to cancel the Spanish thriller series Billionaires’ Bunker (El refugio atómico) after just one season, despite it being one of the streamer’s most ambitious and expensive productions from Spain.
The news was reported by Spanish outlet El País, which confirmed that plans for a second season were quietly scrapped behind the scenes.
The series, which premiered on September 19, followed a group of billionaires hiding in a luxury, retro-futuristic bunker during World War III.
The cast included Pau Simón, Alícia Falcó, Miren Ibarguren, Agustina Bisio, and Joaquín Furriel, and some of the filming took place at Netflix’s Tres Cantos campus near Madrid.
The cancellation comes as a surprise because the show was heavily promoted as a flagship project for Netflix Spain. Season one ended on a dramatic cliffhanger, leaving many storylines unresolved. Fans hoping for a continuation will now be left without answers.
Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of Content in Spain, previously highlighted the scale of the project, saying, “There has not been a series as ambitious in the history of Spain as El refugio atómico.”
Before the series even premiered, creator Álex Pina had hinted at the possibility of a follow-up season.
In an interview with Spanish site Espinof, he said, “We have thought about how to start things back again, since we had to do it in order to write the season finale. So what happens immediately afterwards is laid out, as well as ideas on how to get even more mean and hardcore. What we have not thought about yet is how season 2 would be mapped out.”
