Netflix Drops First Trailer for Gritty Family Power Drama ‘Amsterdam Empire’

Netflix has released the first trailer for its new series Amsterdam Empire, a high-stakes family drama full of secrets, betrayal, and power struggles. Fans of shows like Succession can expect intense twists and tense confrontations.

The series is set in Amsterdam and centers on the Van Doorn family, who run a successful cannabis empire called the Jackal. Jacob Derwig stars as Jack van Doorn, the founder and ruthless head of the business.

When Jack’s affair with a journalist is revealed, his wife Betty, played by Famke Janssen, becomes his most dangerous rival. “This is my first Dutch-language role,” Janssen said. “I also wanted to help make sure the series stayed true to its vision.”

Betty is a former pop star turned strategist, using her knowledge of Jack’s secrets to take control from within. The supporting cast includes Elise Schaap, Jade Olieberg, Jesse Mensah, and Yannick van de Velde as members of the Van Doorn family, with Victor Löw, Romana Vrede, Raymond Thiry, and Chris Nietvelt in additional roles.

The show blends family conflict with the unique backdrop of Amsterdam’s cannabis trade. It is created by the team behind Netflix hits Undercover and Ferry and is directed by Jonas Govaerts and Max Porcelijn. Filming took place on location in Amsterdam, giving the series an authentic look and feel. Production was handled by Pupkin Film and A Team Productions.

Netflix confirmed that Amsterdam Empire will premiere on October 24, 2025, in the United States, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. The first season will have seven episodes designed for a tight, fast-moving story without filler.

The trailer shows dramatic confrontations, luxurious settings, and the dangerous game of power and revenge within the Van Doorn family. With a mix of ambition, glamour, and cunning, the series promises to be a must-watch for fans of family power dramas.
