Netflix has officially confirmed that its Japanese series Last Samurai Standing will return for a second season.

The news comes after fans finished the first season and were left with major cliffhangers. The renewal was confirmed by Netflix through a new announcement video and public statements from the show’s creators.

The first hint came earlier than expected. Netflix France shared the news before any global announcement. On December 18, the Netflix France account posted that the series would be back for season two. The post quickly caught attention online and was later confirmed by Netflix itself.

Soon after, Netflix released a video confirming the renewal and included comments from the show’s lead actor and director. Junichi Okada, who stars in the series and also serves as a producer, reacted to the news with excitement.

“I’m pleased to see that Last Samurai Standing has reached global audiences and has been confirmed for a second season,” Okada said. “I’m excited to get back into this wild world and once again charge into battle with the production team. We hope to make the next season even more energetic and action-packed.”

Director Michihito Fujii also shared his thoughts following the confirmation. He said the show’s success outside Japan meant a lot to the team.

“First and foremost, I would like to say that I’m very pleased and relieved that Last Samurai Standing has been such a big hit outside Japan,” Fujii said. “I’m also honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season.” He added that the team plans to make the next season bigger and stronger than the first.

Last Samurai Standing is a Netflix original live-action series from Japan. It is based on the novel Ikusagami by Shogo Imamura. The story is set in the late 1800s during Japan’s Meiji era and takes place around Kyoto’s Tenryū-ji Temple. The plot follows hundreds of fighters who enter a dangerous contest for a large cash prize, with only one winner allowed to reach Tokyo. The main character joins the fight to save his sick family.

The series stars Junichi Okada alongside Yumia Fujisaki and Kaya Kiyohara. It first premiered with two episodes at the Busan International Film Festival in September. The full six-episode season later launched worldwide on Netflix in November.

The show has also been well received by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, all published reviews so far have been positive, giving the series a perfect 100% score based on early critic reactions.

Netflix has not yet shared a release date for season two. For now, fans can expect the story to continue with more battles, higher stakes, and a larger scale when the series returns.
