Netflix is bringing the popular Persona video game franchise closer to the world of live action. According to Variety, the streaming giant is developing a live-action series based on the hit role-playing game series.

The project is still in development, and Netflix has not officially commented on the news. However, sources told Variety that Christopher Monfette has been chosen to write the adaptation and will also serve as showrunner and executive producer.

The series will also have a strong production team behind it. Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood from 21 Laps are set to executive produce the project. Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson will also executive produce through Story Kitchen, a company known for adapting video game properties for film and television.

Toru Nakahara from Sega will join the project as an executive producer as well. Emily Feher is overseeing the series for 21 Laps, which currently has an overall television deal with Netflix.

The Persona franchise is one of the most successful Japanese role-playing game series in the world. Created by P-Studio, a division of Atlus, and published by Sega, the games combine everyday high school life with supernatural battles and mysterious threats.

While each game tells a different story, the franchise usually follows young characters who balance normal activities like school, friendships, and personal growth while also fighting powerful enemies in another world.

The first game in the series, Revelations: Persona, was released in 1996 as a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. Since then, Persona has grown into a major gaming brand with six main entries and numerous spin-off titles.

The latest major release was Persona 5: The Phantom X in 2025, while Persona 6 has also been officially confirmed to be in development. Another upcoming title, Persona 4 Revival, is expected to arrive in 2027.

A live-action Persona series would mark another major video game adaptation for Netflix. The streamer has already found success with projects based on popular gaming franchises, including The Witcher, Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

The involvement of 21 Laps also adds major attention to the project. The production company is best known for producing Stranger Things, one of Netflix’s biggest original hits. The company has also worked on shows such as The Perfect Couple and Last Man Standing, as well as films including Backrooms and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Story Kitchen’s involvement also fits with the project’s direction. The company focuses on adapting video games and other popular intellectual properties into movies and television shows. Its upcoming projects include live-action versions of Tomb Raider and Life Is Strange.

For writing duties, Monfette brings experience from several major television projects. His previous credits include work on shows such as 12 Monkeys, Star Trek: Picard, and 9-1-1. He is also attached as a writer and co-executive producer on Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest.

Details about the story, cast, release date, and which Persona game the series will focus on have not been revealed. However, with Netflix, Sega, and experienced production companies involved, the live-action Persona adaptation is already becoming one of the most talked-about upcoming video game projects.
