Netflix Just Released a New “Based on True Story” Film That Could Become Its Next Big Hit

Netflix’s new film brings attention to a real story that unfolded in the Mediterranean over several years. The movie follows a group of young activists who decided they could not simply watch the migration crisis from afar and instead took action by joining civilian search-and-rescue efforts.

The film is inspired by the real-life work of Jugend Rettet, a German non-governmental organization created in 2015 by volunteers who wanted to help people crossing one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes.

Many of the volunteers had no previous experience with maritime rescue, but they launched a crowdfunding campaign and bought a ship to begin saving lives.

The vessel at the center of 23,000 Lives film was the Iuventa. Before becoming a rescue ship, it had spent decades working as a fishing boat and later as an offshore supply vessel. In 2016, Jugend Rettet purchased the 32-meter ship for around €130,000 and transformed it into a humanitarian rescue vessel.

The Iuventa was not designed to carry thousands of people at once. Instead, its role was to act as a first responder. The crew operated close to the Libyan search-and-rescue area, using smaller boats to reach migrants in danger before larger rescue ships arrived.

During missions, the volunteers provided emergency help, handed out life jackets, treated injuries, and helped move vulnerable people away from dangerous situations. Many passengers had already survived traumatic journeys before reaching the Mediterranean.

According to information from Jugend Rettet, the Iuventa took part in 16 rescue missions between 2016 and 2017. During that time, the crew assisted 175 boats and helped rescue more than 23,000 people, which became the inspiration behind the film’s title.

However, the organization’s work quickly became controversial. As European governments debated how to respond to migration, some critics accused civilian rescue groups of making crossings easier for smugglers. Jugend Rettet rejected those claims and argued that its only goal was preventing deaths at sea.

On its official website, the organization stated, “We never hid what we were doing. Our aim was simple: to make the crossing less deadly. If that made a smuggler’s job marginally easier, and the border guard’s job of violent exclusion marginally harder, then so be it.”

The situation escalated in 2017 when Italian authorities seized the Iuventa after allegations that some crew members had worked with smugglers during rescue operations. Prosecutors claimed that volunteers had coordinated with traffickers and returned empty boats so they could be reused.

The investigation lasted years and became a major legal battle. In 2021, Italian prosecutors charged several individuals and organizations, but after a long court process, the case collapsed. In April 2024, the Court of Trapani dismissed the charges, ruling that there was not enough evidence to continue the case.

The court found that the investigation relied on incomplete information and that some evidence had been interpreted in a misleading way. After almost seven years of legal proceedings, the crew members were cleared of criminal allegations.

Even though the legal battle ended, the Iuventa never returned to rescue work. The ship remained held in Italy for years and suffered serious damage while sitting unused. According to Jugend Rettet, the vessel deteriorated because of corrosion, missing equipment, and a lack of maintenance.

Experts later determined that repairing the ship would cost more than its value. Today, the Iuventa remains unable to operate, while Jugend Rettet continues legal action seeking compensation for the damage.

Netflix’s 23,000 Lives tells a story that goes beyond one ship. It explores the risks, political debates, and human consequences surrounding civilian rescue efforts in one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes.
