Netflix’s true crime series Monster has started filming its fourth season in Los Angeles, this time focusing on the infamous Lizzie Borden case.

The announcement that the show is in the works came on July 28, revealing that Ella Beatty would play Borden.

Rebecca Hall and Vicky Krieps were cast as her stepmother, Abby Borden, and the family maid, Bridget Sullivan, respectively. On September 14, actor Charlie Hunnam confirmed he was in talks to play Lizzie’s father, Andrew Borden. Shortly after, Billie Lourd and Jessica Barden joined as Lizzie’s older sister Emma Borden and actress Nance O’Neil.

Lizzie Borden is a historical figure from Fall River, Massachusetts, who gained notoriety in the late 19th century. In 1892, she was accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe.

The case shocked the nation and became a part of American folklore after she was acquitted of all charges. Her story has inspired numerous books, plays, and films over the years.

The new season of ‘Monster’ focusing on Ed Gein premiered on October 3, but received largely negative reviews from critics. Reviewers criticized the season for its meta commentary, long runtime, unnecessary subplots, graphic violence, and factual inaccuracies. Opinions were mixed regarding Hunnam’s portrayal of Ed Gein.

So far, the 3rd season sits on a 20% Rotten Tomatoes score.

This upcoming installment of Monster marks a departure from previous seasons, focusing on a historical true crime rather than a modern case. Fans and viewers will likely be divided, given the controversial nature of the story and the show’s graphic style.
